I have a question about my four month old gsd puppy. I have had him since he was eight weeks old but he still want play with any tugs of toys. He doesn't even play with a rag or old shirt. I have tried all I know. I really want my dog to work.
Teething possibly could be the issue w/painful baby teeth? (although pups normally play tug/rag anyway)..just a thought...check his mouth and look for a overshot jaw too..
quite agree with Tangi. At this time your pup is starting to change his milk teeth. you still and play with him but throw the cloth but don't play tug make him win at this time.
What is the difference what the bloodlines are? If the dog has great bloodlines and doesn't work, it's even harder to accept. You would probably spend alot more time trying to build prey drive in a dog that has none.
If you want a pup with great drive, I would highly recommend buying a pup with obviously great drive. The bloodlines would be a secondary concern. If I were interested in breeding, then I would be much more concerned with bloodlines in addition to seeing the drive with my own eyes.
Will he chase the ball? Maybe its a stick that he wants? What type of moment do you put in the tug?
Did you just start playing tug with him? They asked a good question did he have prey drive before he turned 3-4 months? Did he loss it, or he never had it??? I hope for your sake some of this is true. If not then you can't build whats not there.

I work for a GSD kennel training there dogs in basic obed. These are not working dogs there pets.
At 5 weeks old there showing a lot of pray or mabe play drive. Anyway they chase me a ball and a rag all over the place. At 6 mo. Its all gone. All of it! You cant evan play with most of them they become lovers and very nice house pets. Its the genes.Just as you cant run a car with out fuel,You wont have a ( good ) working dog with out the fuel and thats in the genes. I have a great little bitch and she will title. But she is not a compatition dog.She has mixed blood lines. Thats not bad thats just reality. There are exceptions, but there few and far between.
