Eric Sacks Webboard User Reg: 06-18-2008 Posts: 230 Loc: Honolulu, Hawaii Offline	Hi all, I just picked up 1.5 lbs of duck necks from Chinatown. Are these ok to feed Cleo (my 13.5 week old, 35 lbs. Presa puppy)? She is a serious "gulper," wolfing down large chunks of food. My concern is choking hazard. The necks are pretty soft. I would say they're a little bigger and tougher than chicken necks but smaller and softer than turkey necks. Cleo handles chicken necks with a chomp or two, then swallows. When I give turkey necks, I chop them up with a cleaver so she won't try to gulp the whole thing down. (lately I stopped given turkey necks on advice from Mike not to cut them up). Problem is chicken necks are not available in quantity here in Hawaii. I would love to hear thoughts, comments, suggestions. Mahalo. http://web.mac.com/spacecadet808/Site/Cleos_Page.html

The first swimming lesson we gave Oscar ended with some very scraped up shoulders, as all he wanted to do was climb up onto us and hang on!! I think duck necks are just fine, in terms of nutrition, though if they aren't much longer than the chicken necks, she may still try to swallow them in one bite... I'm pretty sure my dog swallows chix necks whole, and his belly handles them fine, but he's much bigger and if you're concerned about her not chewing, I'd keep an eye out for larger RMBs. If you seem to have more duck than chicken suppliers where you are, could you find duck backs or "cages"? I assume duck is broken down the same way as chicken and the backbone and rib cage are not desirable human fare... though what do I know about Hawaiian cuisine. I'd still be looking for larger chunks of anatomy to encourage this pup to chew more, but strictly speaking, necks will certainly provide her with good nutrition (as part of a larger diet). ~Natalya

Thanks for the kind words about Cleo. I didn't know all of the photos were posted ...That was from a web gallery might wife sent me. I tried to just post one like you have at the bottom (by the way, that is one of the all time great photos..beautiful dog). How come the one photo of Cleo didn't appear at the bottom? I'm so used to hacking off HEAPS of fat off the chicken backs I get from my butcher (it's not natural how much fat some commercial birds carry around - even INSIDE their body ...), I don't even think about what the "normal" fat content of these guys should be, I just trim it down till it looks right ... but you're right, duck's a bit on the fatty side. I wonder if it's evenly distributed, or mostly in the darker body meat - necks might still be leaner...? Eric, I'm sure it's still fine to feed, just be aware that excess fat can cause loose stools, totally depending on the dog. ~Natalya

I'm only going to give her 1 or 2 a day and monitor her. Funny, Natalya, I do the same thing with the chicken I feed Cleo and Alex. I have to buy whole chickens from Costco and cut them into quarters myself (I've found that's the cheapest here). I always cut off most, if not all, the skin and any excess fat. I am sure the duck neck he was able to get was without the skin attached. The skin on a duck neck is very loose. Duck parts are great variety. You may inquire about the feet and other edible parts. Chances are if you are that close to a chinese market, you can get all kinds of goodies for cheap.
