Hello: I am trying to get all my supplies together to start feeding the raw diet and just wanted to check to see if I am missing anything, We purchased a freezer and a LEM meat grinder and food processor just to prepare the meats. I found a supplier for the green tripe, and meats, I have bought steamed bonemeal, seameal, pure MSM. cold pressed olive oil, flax seed oil, and garlic, vit. C. I am going to go to the health food store tomorrow to see if I can find the salmon oil and brewers yeast. I keep thinking that I am forgetting something. Any additional ingredients that anyone can think of will be appreciated. I plan on making up individual portions and freezing it. Then make up a health mix and add to the food daily. I am totally new to this, am going to switch my 2 adult GSDs and my standard poodle (5 months old) and will be getting a GS puppy in a couple weeks that will already be on the diet, so am putting alot to study and thought into it, but now I am ready to do it. I am a little nervous about getting it right...

I get my Salmon oil and vit E off of eBay. I would use Salmon instead of flax oil, dogs process the salmon much better than the flax.
I get di-calcium phosphate from local livestock feed stores, it's a cattle feed suplement. It's much cheaper than bone meal, but has the same cal/phos ratio as bone meal. I have not had any loose stool problems with my dogs since I switched.
A bag of very moldy smelling bone meal forced me to look for an alternative, plus bone meal can be hard to find in the winter.

.. I wouldn't of thought about checking the di-calcium phosphate.
The raw diet properly done (with RMBs approximately the way they "come" on the prey animal or bird) does not need calcium supplements of any kind, including bone meal. The bones you feed are the bone meal "on the hoof," so to speak.

Is your dog a senior (MSM)? I would skip the flax oil -- the long-chain Omega 3s in marine products (fish oil) are what dogs need; they don't convert flax's ALA to DHA and EPA the way humans do (and humans are not very good at it, either).
The thiosulphate in garlic and onions is toxic to dogs in large amounts. The toxic amount is variable and individual, so it's probably best not to make it a regular thing at all of feeding either one.
Brewers yeast causes gas in some dogs, which is something I try to avoid in bloat-vulnerable breeds.
Did you find your fish oil OK? And Vitamin E?

The first link is very handy for a first-timer because it actually lists a couple of sample menus for adult dogs. It uses poultry for the RMBs (inexpensive and has digestible bones) and adds variety in the added muscle meats. (This is probably the most common way by far of formulating a raw diet.)
I start with a very simplified version, adding one ingredient at a time day by day, since I am usually switching a pre-owned dog who has been on kibble (and probably the worst kibble) all his life. But it can be helpful to go that route for switching any dog, because any item that presents a digestive challenge will be easy to identify this way.
The second one is the LB puppy feeding plan.

Connie, Yes I found my fish oil and the Vit E that you suggested at the health store the 2nd time I went in. My German Shepherd dogs are 5-6 years old, Standard poodle 5 months old, and then I get my 8 week old GS puppy Thursday. I got those ingredients you mentioned from the breeders suggestion. Her diet plan for puppies and the adults are on her website if you want to check it out. http://www.vandenheuvelk9.com. She has been feeding the RAW diet for years. I purchased both my shepherds from her and she was feeding it then, and now getting my new puppy from her, and because she strongly recommends it to her puppy buyers, I started seriously looking into it. I am open to any suggestions, as I want to do this right. Thanks!
