My 14 month old GSD is crate trained and has been since 8 weeks. He sleeps in my room (in a crate). My goal is to have him not have to sleep in the crate everynight so if someone tries to break in he would be right there. I have 2 kids (3 and 5) and the dog is really good around them, but as a puppy his drive was just to much to let him wander through the house unsupervised (always supervised when kids around though).
Anyways, I just say "crate" and he goes right in. There is a lot of info on how to crate train. But how do I uncrate train so, if I ever needed his protection training, he would be available ? If I leave the crate door open he gets confused and goes right up to my bed and breaths in my face, like "you forgot to close the door". Anyways, I'd appreciate any ideas you all might have. Your advice in the past has made my life much easier.
Thanks in advance
You just roll over while he stands there and watches you sleep. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> I'm actually halfway serious - when my old dog died and the 5 yr old got promoted to full time house dog, he was on his feet every time I moved. Only took him a couple nites of being ignored for him to get used to it and settle down. Do it this weekend so if you lose a bit of sleep, you won't be cranky in the morning!
Mine are also crate trained. But for those times when a crate is not around, I have tought them "place" which will put them on a towel or blanket on the floor.
