Hi,
We brought our 2nd pup home about 10 days ago.
All in all, doing pretty well.
Each has a large crate, at opposite ends of the TV room.
Starting about 2 days ago, when I put the dogs out on the
deck, which leads them to the 'go potty' area of grass, (and I say GO POTTY)
the new pup wants nothing to do with it.
As soon as he hits the deck from house (coming out of crate) he sniffs for a few seconds and squats.
I pick him up and carry him to the grass while saying 'potty here' when we reach the grass. Its only about 10' away.
I literally stand at the opening of the deck to grass area and won't let him thru until he pottys. I will say a few times 'go potty', but he wants nothing to do with it. So, back in his crate he goes - for about ten minutes, then I do this again.
Eventually he does go, but he is so reluctant.
He watches his brother go potty in the grass, but he would rather just squat on the deck, or hold his urine.
Im sure I should put more details in here, but I hope you get the gist of it, and someone has knowledge on this.
Thank you in advance!
Have A Great Day,
Debbie

Puppies are stupid. Eventually they grow up and prefer the grass. Just keep enforcing the grass as a potty area, don't give him the opportunity to go on the deck (pick his ass up if you have to) and mark/reward for correctness.

Mine preferred concrete for awhile. Now it's all grass.

Do you walk down onto the grass with the pup, or do you tend to stand on the porch and watch?
I only ask because there is a slim chance that he might feel more comfortable if you were down there too. If he just came from the breeder and is used to being in a kennel run or whelping box, the yard seems pretty big and overwhelming.
The porch probably seems a tad more familier.
Walking down onto the grass and staying out there with him might help this habit pass a tad quicker. Either way, he will eventually grow out of it on his own. They learn their feet get wet when they piddle on porches and sidewalks.

Yep, this one sure is stupid. Kai was easy. Had the potty routine down in one or two days.
I do walk onto the grass area, and is strictly for peeing and pooping.
Its only about 12x12, and I pick up their 'goods' after they leave them.
Actually they came from a breeder with 4 acres of grass to run on. fantastic breeder. TRULY loves his dogs.
Ive been watching them both a lot the last few days, and when I take them to the park, Kai will pee about 3 times.
Link wont go at all.
Seems he has a liking for the deck. He is going to learn real fast he is either in the crate, or he gets to play outside with his brother if he potty's in the right spot.
Cuz Ive been up since 4 am this morning with the Link'sta.
Thanks Everyone - the board really does help in not feeling so alone on each specific topic we all need help on at times!
Great board as its always been.
Have A Great Day,
Debbie

You got that right.
I am picking his ass up as soon as he does it.
He is almost 30 pounds @ 14 weeks, and he is taking my back out.
Vet estimated Link at 85-90 pounds, and Kai at 55-60 pounds.
Thanks!
Have A Great Day,
Debbie

Quincy did not like to pee away from home at first. I just would stick to your guns. He will give in soon and pick up some other issue to fight you on.

He watches his brother go potty in the grass, but he would rather just squat on the deck, or hold his urine.
Are you taking them out separately or together? Combination?
I'd start taking him out solo for a bit until he gets the jist of it...JMHO.

Ivan was similar - Kavik goes in the same spot pretty much every time, and Ivan would go the moment his feet hit the back porch. I had to swiftly walk him (on leash) to the appropriate spot for a few weeks until he seemed to "get" it. I don't take him out on leash anymore, but I occasionally have to verbally remind him to not pee on the steps or the support columns to the house (at least he isn't going on the porch anymore!) vigilance and prevention seem to work the best while the habit is learned.

I would put a leash on him before going out, and lead him right outside. If he tries to stop or squat I would tell him "pfui" or whatever, pull him away, then lead him to the grass and tell him "go potty", wait, and praise when he does.
