You might think this is silly...but here goes. I am picking up my new GSD boy (first Sch dog!!) this weekend. He is an adult, and i intend to start him on a raw diet immediately. This is a first for me, and am curious as to how to feed him inside my house without a huge mess. I will be starting with chicken leg quarters, then adding ingredients as we go. How to you feed inside without a big mess? If I feed him inside his kennel, wont it get nasty? or am i worrying too much? Thanks!

It depends on the dog. If you feed him in his crate, you will need to wipe the crate out after eating.
My dog tends to eat in one spot, so I can just wipe up any drips after she's finished. I do not feed her in the crate. However, she doesn't carry her food around... but some dogs do, and will leave a trail of raw drips.
That being said, I find it much easier to feed her raw outside. No muss, fuss or cleanup involved...

I feed my dogs and cats in their crates (they all eat raw). My dog likes to spread out each ingredient across the front of her crate and eat one ingredient at a time. Since she is a pup, I keep the door closed while she eats, this seems to keep the crate more clean since she takes the time to lick up the crumbs, and it gives me the opportunity to prepare the next day's meal in peace.

I bought an inexpensive shower curtain and spread that out on the floor. My dog tends to eat the meaty part in the bowl, but he lifts up (and consequently sometimes drops!) the bone parts on the floor. Sometimes when he crunches on the bone, he tends to walk a few steps forward.
It took me a few days to figure out the starting placement of the bowl to ensure everything stayed on the shower curtain...lol.
I wash the shower curtain off after he is done, and once a week it goes into the washing machine.
Good luck with your new pup and congratulations on starting him off right in life with raw food!

I feed mine inside their crates. They lick the crate and their paws clean.

My raw supplier has 2 Irish Wolfhounds that she feeds on a tarp inside the house. I guess the dogs associate the tarp with meal time and understand (or were trained)that is their "place" to eat.
Her suggestion to me was to start out in an area you can block or close off so if the dog likes to "eat on the move" you don't have bits of blood and meat all over the house. Confining the dog to one area, at least in the beginning, also keeps you from having to interfere while he's eating.

I started feeding raw in the summer, so I just fed the dog outside in the yard at first.
Once I knew her eating habits (she likes to lay down with her food, especially chicken), I began feeding her inside her crate (she still eats in the yard occassionally).
She licks it clean, but I usually go in there every other day or so and wipe it down with disinfectant. I doubt it's necesary, since the only thing on the wipes when I'm done is dog hair, but it gives me peace of mind.

Great point. I have three totally different eating-types. One never touches his food with anything but his mouth, and never drags it out of the dish.
One sorts it all out in a two-foot radius before he even starts.

That sounds as if it would be quite comical to watch Connie.
I feed my dog on a small (6'x6') tarp. Similar to a "place" command she has learned that is where she eats regardless of inside/outside or when we are away from home. It took a little repetition and reinforcement at first but she learned quickly to associate it with eating.
