this actually really does make me very upset, almost to tears. And i am not eve a breeder who has spent their whole life fighting to keep their breed at the top of it's game....
ughhh. I can see my BYB boss and his stupid mutts now jumping at this BS move by the AKC.
IMO, AKC doesn't mean anything anyway. I have purchased "AKC" registered dogs, and I love them to death, but they had more problems then you can think of. Skin problems, thyroid problems, allergies, one had very weak nerves, one had separation anxiety to the point of chewing the paint off the bars of his kennel, and the list goes on. AKC does not do any kind of health or temperment screen before they register these dogs. Now don't get me wrong, there are some very good AKC breeders who really care about doing better for the breed, but IMO, not everyone should be allowed to breed dogs. I paid very good money for my dogs, and when I told one breeder the problems that that I was having with the puppy I purchased, he said "I'll take him back, I want to breed him back to his mother anyway", are you freaking kidding me??? Needless to say, I kept the puppy (I still have him to this day), I nutered him, and he is on three diffrent meds for the rest of his life for his problems. But thats ok he's AKC.
P.S. sorry if I offended anyone, I'm just a little upset with the whole AKC issues, and this has happened to me on more than one occasion, and yes, some of them were highly recommended breeders.
Maybe it's time for breed clubs to have thier own registries and akc registration only means you can enter the shows. People who say AKC registration means nothing are right in my opinion. The knowledge of your breeder and the breeders of the dogs in the pedigree are what really matter and the trust you have in them.
AKC has already allowed breeders to destroy breeds. Everyone here knows the differences between show line and working line GSD's. Working vs. show Springer Spaniels have an even greater divergence, to the point where they should not even be called the same breed.
The breeder I worked with for my working line GSD was telling me about the inbreeding that the AKC will allow, and they will still register the puppies. They don't care about genetic defects, or for that matter, whether or not both parents have the same defect. Both parents can have hip defects, be brother and sister, and the pups will still be registered (according to my breeder).
Are there any registries that actually have the best interests of the breed in mind? Or do they all only care about getting more dogs registered for $x each? My dog is AKC registered, because that's the only real registry in the US. I get RIDICULOUS amounts of junk mail from them trying to get me to buy more crap. I get emails from them. I'm surprised they haven't started knocking on my door yet.
AKC mmmmm, and everyones surprised... Why? IMO the akc is the unbridled ibm of yesteryear. Is there a Bill Gates of the dog world to tell them where to get off? Then that will probably bring up a whole new set of problems! LoL
This would only matter if AKC was a steward of the breeds they pumped out paperwork on.
It is important that everyone know that AKC is nothing in regards to statements of the quality of the animals and that individual sport clubs are the real stewards of the breeds.
If you want a hunting dog you find a hunting dog breeder, you want a working GSD you find a working dog breeder, you want crap find the want ad that start with AKC registered...whatever..
