Ok so for the past 3 months or so Isis has been shedding like crazy! I know GSD sheds twice a year correct? Well, she's on the Canidae diet along with the Grizzle salmon oil. We brush her daily if not every other day with reg brushes and the furminator. What else could it be? I understand dogs will always be shedding SOME hair but everytime I brush her it's a huge pile of hair and I also sweep up a good amount of hair off the floor. Anybody would know why she's over shedding? She still has lots and lots of fur so it's not like she's only losing hair. Thanks in advance and Ed or Cindy can chime in I'd appreciate also.
BTW...She's not 8 months and doing really really well. I just need to work on her commands with distractions. I also need to work on her greeting of new people (she gets overly excited if she knows they are going to say hi to her and she still happy pees).
All my dogs shed all the time. GSD Doberman Mal. sometimes more than others. GSD is by far the worst. They are all on raw diet. Just part of having a dog.
I once had a vet tell me that his wife wouldn't let him have a GSD because they shed too much.
I've had GSD's and they always seem to shed. The "blow" their coats 2 times a year where they really could use a trip to the groomer for the heavy duty air dryer to get rid of all the winter hair, etc.
I am always vacuuming around their crates (my lab as well) and it never ends. Just something you get used to like any other chore- well, maybe not
BTW- Mine are also fed raw with salmon oil, vitamin E sups

Edit reason: add info
Right now your dog is blowing coat -- that's why you are getting a TON of hair off right now. This has nothing to do with what you are feeding or what you are supplementing with... it has to do with having a dog! But all dogs do shed year-round, kinda the same way people are always losing a few strands of hair here or there.
At eight months she is /also/ getting rid of some of her puppy fuzz which is why this is probably a little overwhelming on the hair front! Keep doing what you are doing -- brushing/furminating. I suggest doing it outside so the wind will help clean some of the hair up.
I purchased a Metro Air Force Dryer to use on my dogs and it is great, it blows the hair away, I also use the furminator, and it's really good, but, the Metro dryer is super. It also drys the dogs really fast without the fear of burning them, so that is a plus. Also it helps clean up the hair that you brush out if you use it outdoors.
I had a lady come into the store the other week and tell me the same thing. I think the weather has just been really weird here and that's what's doing it.
I don't know if I would use the furminator every day. I have a GSD and the furminator and it says to only use it when the dog is clean and if used too often, that it can irritate the skin. Overbrushing period can irritate the skin. GSD's are bad about shedding constantly other than blowing coat a couple times a year. I found this out the hard way. I even asked about it here. It's all par for the course.
i have 3 GSD boys, and i'm totally starting to believe that shedding is genetic (all 3 from different lines) ... the oldest two hardly shed at all (comparatively speaking ) and Porter sheds so much it's a wonder he has any hair left!! (and they all eat raw with LOTS of grizzly salmon oil)
i furminate all 3 GSDs every other day to every couple of days without any irritation. i do it outside of course, in combination with the most awesome tool out their for shedding dogs ... a GIANT AIR COMPRESSOR! (my BF and i have it for all of our toys)
