I was thinking about my dogs having a purpose around the house, a job. I was trying to think of what they could do and unfortunately my brain is sluggish. Does anyone have ideas or a resourse I could use to put my dogs to work at home? Or some experiences that they have had with a job at home and how it has affected their dogs? ( have 3 terrior mixes who are always looking for something to do, they can tire me out)
Thank you

digs up that darn pesky lawn that keeps trying to grow back.
Gardening...yep, my dog is an accomplished green thumb..um...paw. Very able at transplanting flowers and shrubs. Cleans up all debris that falls in the yard. Does a FANTASTIC job fertilizing the lawn. He also does some mighty fine trenching which isn't really useful at home but would be valuable on a construction site.
My dog also does a masterful job of making sure the house is clean every single day...It's his primary job around the house.
Anyway phoenix and bruiser pick there own toys up I have this box and they have tp pick all there toys up befor bed.
I started by picking up there toys and saying bed toys.
And one day phoenix followed. So then bruiser I would put his leash on and show him where his toys sit.
So then I would put the toys up and say toy bed.
And he picked it up to.
Now they don't get every toy if there's 5 out they mabye get 3.
I also taught phoenix to open the fridge door and the bedroom doors and front door. Put a cloth on the doors its like tug a war. And treat them phoenix quickly relized she could open doors.
I will also take treat normally liver or fish so they can smell them better. And hind them around the house and outside. We keep them in the kitchen and hind them then tell them to find.
We also found a home aglity course and use that to.

My young male dog is an excellent town crier. Someone walking by, someone at the door, UPS, Mailman, strange dog? He starts barking at the top of his lungs "SECURITY ALERT SECURITY ALERT SOMEONE'S AT THE DOOR". If I don't go look or if he is in a run - he keeps barking until I tell him to stop, and let me tell you, this guy has the loudest bark of any GSD I have ever owned. We call him "Loud Mouth Lime".
He also is very good at making deposits - poop deposits.

I have to say my dogs enjoy being helpful too!
They shred the paper and cardboard for me so it fits in the recycle bin easier.
They unfold any laundry that I have failed to get just right, ensuring I don't end up with wrinkled clothes...
They make sure the dishes in the dishwasher are properly rinsed before I wash them...
They make sure the soil in the flower beds stays "aerated"...
Leonidas does have one actually useful job. I taught him to shut drawers, and now several times a day he checks to make sure they are all closed. It comes in handy with teenagers in the house who leave everything opened. Also does doors, but not as reliably. Sometimes he pushes the wrong side and ends up
opening them wide.
I get bored and teach my dog to do random things to amuse me. He can pick things up and bring them to me, turn the lights on and off (wall switch) and is learning how to open the refrigerator. He can already identify "bottle" for a soda or beer.
I used his natural Doberman tendency to spin to teach him to wipe his feet on the doormat. He'll spin on the mat until his paws are clean.
Of course, being the good dog that he is, he's always willing to mop up food from the kitchen floor too.
This winter I hope to teach him to press the elevator buttons and turn the TV on and off.
