So I just got my first e-mailed pics of what will be coming off the plane for my next serious ring prospect. Nice looking little pup. The guy who is bringing him over for me thinks extremely highly of his potential. I didn't ask for a blue, but blue is what he is.
So, given that I think turning down a great pup FOR being blue is as narrow-sighted as turning down a great pup for NOT being blue, I wanted to discuss colour dilution and health. Personally I have not known enough blue mals or dutchies long enough to form an opinion on dilution's affect on long-term appearance or health.
Thoughts? Thanks!
P.S. I do want to add that the pup is basically double-guaranteed from both my contact in Canada and my contact overseas for health and workability. Mostly I want to avoid getting into any high-risk situation or virtually guaranteed losing proposition.
Jennifer,
I had to check, but we did have a discussion on the blue mals back awhile ago. (let me see if I've done this right)
Re: Blue Gene in Malinois. Darn!
Well, any ways, it's in the 'general breeding discussion' forum from 1/18/08.
Type in blue mals in the search box and page back to about page 8 (?) I think.
Hehe, thanks both! Unfortunately there are two pretty conflicting opinions; first being that it is likely to cause issues, and second being that it won't. I think probably for the most part the blue is not a health concern in this breed (if I am understanding the previous discussion correctly). Nor should it keep him from being bred if he's otherwise fantastic. Even though I am not a breeder, I'm not looking for a "pet" here.
I hope I didn't understand the previous discussion with bias. It seems the problem lies with those breeding for colour, but with blue in the lines being bred for work, there hasn't seemed to be an issue.
