I know this is kinda of a silly question, but, I have a standard poodle (Abbey) 7 month old puppy that I am training for therapy and also taking her to the school for my grandchildrens' classes .
I am training her all kinds of tricks and she is doing great. However, there is one thing that I can not do and it is absolutely driving me crazy.
My granddaughter wants me to put bows on Abbeys ears when I bring her to her school and I can not get them to stay for 2 seconds. So my question is does anyone know how to get a bow to stay on her ears. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
I know this is kind of a different type question (and kind of silly) then usually on here, but, hoping someone can help me with this. (It will make my granddaughter very happy)

Claire,
I don't know anything about keeping bows on a poodle's ears<g>.
However, when I was a kid, our family had a poodle, and my grandmother used to tie a bow in his hair on the top of his head, centered. It would stay on for days.
Perhaps your granddaughter would be content with a bow situated on his head instead of his ears?
She also used to dye him pink or blue at Easter (food coloring). Bet your grandkid would love that<g>.

Thanks that is a good idea, I hadn't thought about the bow on her head. She is a red poodle, so dyeing her wouldn't work, however they would think that was pretty neat.

This has to be one of strangest, funniest things I've seen written on this board. Did she dye him red and green at Christmas?

Bring the dog, the bows and rubberbands into any grooming salon. They can show you how its done.
Usually the key is getting enough hair in the band and getting the bow close enough to the skin.
Best of luck,
Melissa
PS. I am planning to dye my black and white papillon blue for halloween. I'll post some pics.

Melissa's suggestion is a good one. The bands do break the hair, and it does take a little experience to get them on properly, you need hemostats, and they aren't re-usable.
An alternative would be to purchase the bows on clips. If you google it, you can find many internet sites that sell them. They are easy to put in and reusable. Here is one site:

Petsilk sells a top knot gel for about $7.00. I also find that it is more difficult to keep a bow in finer hair if the rubberband is thick. The bands come in different thicknesses and the thin ones stay in the hair better.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. She is my first poodle and she is so much fun. She was in her first parade this week and she loves the spotlight, so I guess I will dress her for the part!

Oh....another poodle fan! I will be a standard owner forever! The grooming thing is realtively easy once you get the hang of it. Just practice, practice, practice. Sometimes you must give in to the ridiculous urge to add props to your dog. My Max had a clown collar (think big velvet ruffles) he wore at Halloween. I used to tell him be proud, your ancestors were performing circus dogs!
I think he much preferred his field ancestors...running after birds in the long grass in a short sporting clip and being a he-man poodle boy.
Don't overdo the bows! It may give her a complex. Under all that hair their is a sporting dog, a nature girl, bursting to be free!
Give her a choice and she'd rather be rolling in horsesh*t or a rotting fish....2 things that put the canine grin of joy on my boy's face!

hi,
i groomed for about 16 yrs. if you know anyone with braces, you can use their teeny tiny rubber bands. yes it takes LOTS of practice and a patient puppy. if you get the rubber band too close to the skin it will hurt and she will scratch them out. if you get them too far they will fall out. it's really an art. you can also get little girls' plastic barrettes that just clip in and are easy.
i had a white cockapoo that i dyed deep purple. that was a long time ago, now its common place and SO fun!! please do post the Pappillon's pics!!!!
