I am so unhappy about this, but I haven't a choice. I am moving in a week or two, and will not have any way to continue doing raw in my new home-- for about a month. And the food available to me is only Eukanuba adult Lamb and Rice.
Should I give probiotics and yogurt to protect my dog's system while he must endure the kibble for a month? Should I begin it by fasting him for 1 day.. then begining the kibble?
He will be back to enjoying his usual turkey hearts, chix backs, fresh raw herring, fresh tripe, beef off-cuts with fat removed, capelin fish, turkey necks, chix legs etc in 1 month.
I am so frustrated that I have no choice here for that first month in my new place, and no other options for a better grade kibble during that month. Is there any dangers to watch out for? Anyone else had to temporarily do this?
Patti, if you have no other options, I would start by splitting his meals in two; 1 raw and the other kibble, maybe 1 week prior to the switch. At least then you will be able to see if he has any bad reaction to the kibble. Make sure to separate by at least 6 hours so that they are not being digested at the same time.
Definately keep giving the probiotic and salmon oil and vit 'e', if you are also giving that, throughout the month.
Thanks, Lynne-- I will give raw 1 meal kibble the other, then for a week until he must do the temporary switch.
Alyssa, I am in Germany, no Honest Kitchen here.. no Bravo, no Canine Kraving, etc. Kibble for about a month.
Believe it or not, the kibbles here in Germany are LOADED with: Corn, wheat, rice.. chicken by products, etc. Not great. You can get Orijen if you can order it online, which I cannot do right now. As it is, I am hoping Grimm has no reaction to the grains in the Eukanuba Lamb and Rice. Oh, well.. we will be able to get back to raw in a bit under a month. Phew! (moving to an isolated tiny town in the mountains, will be without phone for about 2 weeks, need to get freezer set up, find affordable butcher source for raw, etc)
Patti, are you military?
Just curious. If so, I think I can get free shipping from APO to APO. You could have stuff shipped to me, and I can forward it to you via APO.
Thanks for the well-wishes on the move. Ordering online isn't an option as we are in the middle of changing banks here. We will be without phone and internet for about 2 weeks. We will be in a tiny town in the mountains. Raw will be do-able after about a month getting freezer, butcher etc. I am not military.. but thank you for the kind offer, Alyssa! (I keep drooling over that puppy in your sig photo!!) Caption might read "Well?? It's either the bone, or the boots!" LOVE dark sables. We have good taste.
I am trying to remind myself that this is was kibble was originally for-- as a temporary, emergency ration to carry through until real food could again be given. It isn't comforting me much-- because he has changed so much since on raw, all of it positive!
