Having searched the discussion board, I was unable to find exactly what I am looking for, so I am posting this question. As I am new to the dog training and protection work, I have been doing a lot of research. One thing I have come to appreciate is the importance of a good Helper in dog training and moreover, that Helper work is not for everyone. I have been doing some OTJ training in Helper work at a local club and own all of Ed's DVDs pertaining to Helper work. That being said, I would like to take a course designed to train/certify me as a Helper. Does anyone know of any such training program? TRS offers training in Helper work, but only as a part of their 16-20 week curriculum. A pointer in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
Look around your region, and see if they'll be holding a Helper Certification Seminar.
Most regions try and hold one per year, to keep their certifications current.
Go to a local trial, and ask the helpers there, how they got certified.
The USA Helper certification program is focused a little less on a training helper, and more so on trial helping, but you learn quite a bit nonetheless.
Our club just held our certification seminar in August, and it was definitely a learning experience.
P.s.,
Wintertime is a good time to certify. You don't get as hot and sweaty.

Where in VA are you? Our Club, Rivanna SchH & Police Club is holding a USA Helper Seminar & Evaluation next weekend Oct 4-5 with two of the best Teaching Helpers in America, Armin Winkler & Doug Wendling. What's really good for you being in VA is that we're not just bringing Armin in for the Seminar, he's the Helper & TD of the club, so he's always there.
The club is located in Palmyra, about 30 minutes east of Charlottesville.
