I have an approximate 6 month old puppy (adopted about 2 months ago - during that time has had distemper) that I've done very little training with and what I am doing I don't feel like I'm having much success. I have an approximate 6 year old dog I adopted a year ago. I've had mixed results with her because I've been inconsistant.
So, I plan to order the puppy dvd, basic obedience dvd and the pack structure dvd (because the puppy thinks the dog is waaaaay more interesting than me).
I'm also wondering about the micro prong collars. Nabi is around 5.5kg and Hanul is 3.5kg (the vet thinks he won't get much bigger). Nabi pulls when she's walking on the lead, she also goes crazy when she sees other dogs. She doesn't want to attack them, just go and meet and greet and play if possible and won't listen to me at all. People look at her in alarm because they think she wants to attack their puppy/dog. (That's why I adopted the puppy after my other dog died).
I don't have either of the dogs on a short leash or a long leash and haven't tried tethering.
Is there anyone else in this forum who lives in a small aprtment? I live in a "one room" apartment in South Korea so I don't have a lot of room (in reality it's two rooms and a bathroom). I'm always worried about noise and the stairwell is covered in marble. Because I take my puppy out for first morning pee at 5-5.30am I worry about getting them too excited about going outside to go to the toilet. How do others talk up a storm about going outside to go to the toilet without making a lot of noise (and being half asleep)?
So ... if you were making a gift basket for a new puppy owner, what would you put in it?
You can't go wrong with Ed's DVDs on Basic Dog Obedience and Establishing Pack Structure.
There is also a ton of great information on Ed's articles that are available free on this website. Print them out and review them from time to time. Also, some of the articles are available on podcast that you can put on a CD or listen on your mp3 player. Every time I listen to them, I pick up another nuance about dog training that I hadn't picked up before.
As for dog training equipment, you'll get a block of instruction on that topic on the Basic Dog Obedience DVD.
