We have been feeding our GSD Nature's Variety for a short while now. NV is convenient but it's really expensive. My husband and I have decided to try and do it ourselves. We've ordered a couple of books to read and talked to relatives that are already hunting this year. I've recently found a co-op that I'm hoping will help with protein variety but in the meantime, I can get venison now and I hate to pass it up. I did a search on the forums for help with my questions but I only saw a reference to feeding whole/hunted venison and not the actual thread.
So, my questions: What organ parts are best/okay to feed? Heart, lungs, and liver? I figure whatever muscle meat is leftover (after we humans get what we want) is okay to feed but what about bones for meals?
I'm hoping the books will make me feel a bit more educated about all of this. I just wanted to pick your brains in the meantime because I don't want to pass up on fresh, free meat!
With the spread of prion-based diseases ( in mule deer it is CWD, or chronic wasting disease ), I would not feed any part of the brain or spinal cord, just to be safe.
The two states where I'm getting the venison are CWD free at the moment. The states are testing like crazy and unfortunately, I know it's just a matter of time before it gets here. On a side note, CWD has been found in the meat of infected deer. That's a bit scary but so far (in 16+ yrs of study) there's no evidence of human or domestic animals being infected. Still, the thought of mad cow-like disease here does make one hesitate! I'm thinking I can't avoid spinal cord if I feed the neck bones.
