Hi,
I was planning on getting a male working GSD puppy from a litter by Uhli and Pacer, both Vom Leerburg dogs.
Well, the puppies are here, and there are 6 females and 1 male! (The male is already spoken for). I have seen grown up puppies from previous litters with the same parents, and they are all doing great, whether in SchH training or personal protection, SAR, etc...
My dilemna is that I wanted a male, being under the impression that not many females go all the way in SchH (III). Am I right in that thinking?
I could either get a female from this litter of try to get a male from swhere else. I'm not sure what to do... any feedback on the abilities of males vs. females in the dog sport world??
Another thing is: I already have a male GSD 1.5 years old, neutered. Which path would bring me more problems: having another male not neutered, and probably dominant, with him, or having un unspayed female???
Any feedback, word of wisdom, comment would be greatly appreciated...
Thanks!

A super female is just as competitive as a super male. Many people don't bother to title them all the way to a 3 not cuz the bitch isn't capable but cuz they can't wait to start cranking out puppies. Also it's a pain dealing with a female's heat cycles, which can occur right at competition time. In your living situation, however, a bitch would be easier to incorporate into your family. If you get a male, be prepared for the possibility that the two may have to always be kept separated.

Lee,
Thank you for your response. This confirms what I was told by the breeder, who's also our club's trainer. But it's nice to have second opinions. Now I just need to find a name for her. I had "Drakken" picked out for the pup, but I don't think it'll work for a she!
Thanks again...

I think if you like the breeding..and already have a male.. you can work a female. I enjoy working the girls.. I just put a Sch 3 on my female. The heat cycles DO seem to come at competition time.. for both her 2 and 3 she was in heat.. but you can always spay her.. Good luck with your decision!

Thanks, Jody
Isn't there a risk to be kicked off the field during a trial if your dog's in heat? Are the working abilities hindered during the heat cycle (well I guess your female getting her 2 and 3 while in heat should answer that right?? )
I really Do like the breeding and I will get first pick of the litter if I decide to get a female so it's looking more and more like the # of girls at home is about to go up by one!
If only I could find a name for her that still evokes strength and be dreaded by all her future competitors!
Sthing masculine but suited for a girl...

Hi,
I like this name for her it's a very strong name, Athena, it's definition is: The greek godess, who is also Zues favorite daughter. She is fierce and brave in battle, and only fights to protect her home from outside enemies. She is also the embodiment of wisdom, reason, and purity.
Well if may not be masquline enough for you. I hope you enjoy your puppy, your geting a great litter.

Renaud,
I agree with everyone else. I too would choose a female. By reading your post, you seem really excited about this breeding, I think it's the way to go.
But REMEMBER, your neutered male CAN make a "tie" breeding with your female when she comes into heat. She just won't get pregnant.
Have fun with your pup and let us know on a name you choose.

Well thanks to all of you.
I was NOT aware that a neutered male could still tie up with the ladies! Glad you told me, that would have freaked me out...
I love the name Athena and what it conjures...however, it's a D-litter and I was going to try to make an effort to pick a D-name
Is there another strong Greek goddess whose name starts with D????
Or maybe I should call her.... Dathena?
Well thanks all again

Me again,
You could do something like: D-athena, or use the Dathena but still call her Athena either way. The D-litter only means the written pedigree needs to be a D, not her call name.

Hi,
I'm glad you liked the name, there are some other greek godesses with D's but they are all kind of weak, ie, godess of corn, grain, and rice, things like that, and I already know that you would want a strong and ftting name for your girl. And just like Brandi said, it dosen't nessicarily have to be a D name, just on the pedigree. Well good luck with your name search and also picking the right girl.
