Heartworm is a must, i'm surprised you're not using it already. Some countries aren't affected, but I believe the entire US is now. Every month for the rest of the dogs life. Getting rid of heartworms is expensive and potentially fatal, preventative is much cheaper and easier.
Shots... lots of debate there. I give puppy shots and 1 year boosters then leave it at that unless there is some other need, like boarding dogs, that calls for additional shots. I do parvo, distemper and rabies. I had to do kennel cough too, I would prefer to never do that again. I know Leerburg doesn't vaccinate at all. Many people do puppy shots and leave it at that.
As for raw diets. I choose not to discuss diet with vets. My vet doesn't even keep track of shots. If I want shots I call and get them done. She only gives the ones I ask for. Thats the way it should be IMO.

Approximately 90% of dogs respond to treatment for Giardia infection, most infected dogs are asymptomatic, and the disease is not usually life-threatening. The vaccine does not prevent infection but may reduce shedding and clinical signs. The zoonotic potential of Giardia remains unclear. Based on existing evidence, the UC Davis VMTH does not currently recommend routine vaccination of dogs for Giardia spp, and the vaccine is not stocked by our pharmacy.
Argument enough for me- thanks for the link Sarah.

Sarah, I don't think it was giardia. The name started with an "L", god I wish I knew what it was. I don't know..
Anyone else pre-treat their dogs for heart worm? I heard both that it's needed and that it's not.
And how can I tell my vet that I don't want my dogs getting unnecessary vaccines and not have her push it?

About distemper. In 1961 my next door neighbor and the neighbor across the street bred their two GSDs together. We got one of the puppies. My dad took the pup in to see the vet and get her shots. Apparently that didn't happen with the other puppies and every single one of them died from distemper.
Fast forward to 2008 and it came up in a conversation with a young vet who helps out occasionally at the place where we take Hans. I don't remember how we got into the discussion, but she told me that she had only seen one case of distemper in her career, and it wasn't in a dog or cat.
I'm not an expert and I don't want to sound like one, but to me this is like measles. Almost unheard of where vaccination takes place. Is distemper now rare enough that we don't need to vaccinate for it anymore?

Perhaps she was talking about leptospirosis.
According to Catherine J.M. Diodati, MA, in Vaccine Guide for Dogs and Cats, in regards to the leptospirosis vaccine, "Variable, serovar-specific, short-duration immunity. Will not prevent infection or shedding. Risk of anaphylaxis."
The only other L word vaccine I'm familiar with is Lyme disease.
As far as heartworm, I've always used preventative. I give it at 45 day intervals instead of monthly, but I do give it.

As far as heartworm it depends on your area. I live in an area of the US that is not heartworm bearing so I don't treat for it. I also don't hunt in any areas where heartworm is present. I also used to live in Colorado Springs which also didn't require heartworm treatment but did if you went down in altitude for anything. Talk to local dog people, odds are you should be treating in the Dakotas if I recall right.
Odds are the vet was asking you to vaccinate for Lepto and or Lyme. I do both in my hunting dog but do not treat my other dogs for this. As far as I'm concerned the Giardia vaccine is a waste of time and money.

Lepto sounds like the one. Do you think it's a good idea to even get him this vaccine if he has thyroid problems? Since thyroid problems are associated to the immune system being attacked by the body itself?
