i know alot of people here go from buckle to martingale.
what kind of martingale do you use?
does anyone have an opionion or experience with using a herm sprenger CHAIN martingale?
what benefit (or not) might that have? (for obedience and casual walking)
As far as i'm concerned there are only 2 collars to use. A flat collar and a prong collar. Whether to use a prong collar depends on age and how far the dog is in training.
i use a martingale on teagan, either as a back-up to her prong, or, as i try to move away from the prong in certain situation (on the theory that we just keep training, training, training) i like to have just it. she also always wears a deployment collar, simply b/c i like having a handle with her.
i don't find the martingale useful for obedience, corrections, or anything as a collar specifically. i just view it as a flat collar that won't accidentally slip off, which is very important to me.
i think the kind i use is pretty generic, but they've been sturdy enough.
Prong collars are sometimes not suitable for a soft dog that needs just a little more correction than a flat collar but they aren't hard enough for a prong collar. I use martingales on my own dogs and they work well. If you ever have to give a hard correction with a martingale it's time to move to a prong. My lab was very obedient on a martingale but with a flat collar his neck was so muscular he simply didn't feel it.

Depends depends depends. I use a martingale on show dogs,as an alternative to a chain on coated dogs, sometimes on teaching problem dogs to stand still for the grooming table if they are little punks that like to throw their head out of the grooming noose, or anything where i want the dog to settle and hold.
OK--i dont think he is ready yet or "needs" a prong yet--per trainer (he is a little soft). but i think he needs something with a little more feeling to it than his buckle collar... i have a prong & am prepared to upgrade to that when the time comes.
the all-chain martingales seem like they might work as an in-between--?
for those that use martingales, do you use the fabric only? or the fabric with chain loop? or has anyone used the all chain ones (very tiny links in the chain). they are very hard to find, but i do know where they sell them.
