Hi, Well the rain is here and this will be the 1st real winter I have had with my dog MoJo. She is 14 months old. We usually walk every day about 3 miles. As this is my 1st dog I guess I have some questions.
1) Is it ok to take a dog out in the rain?
2) Can a dog get sick from the cold?
3) Should I just not take her out in the rain?
4) Is there some type of rain coat I could get for her?
Thanks for help...
Susan

It’s good to remember this will be your first dog not your first child and you do your dog a disservice if you treat it like one. In fact anthropomorphic behavior is the one of the greatest causes of unbalanced dogs. That said the answers to your questions are: yes, no, yes, no and if I see thata dog in a rain coat I'll have to report you to Will. Regards Norman

3 miles should be no problem in the rain - i take my guys out for a few hours no problem.
i did, however, get a raincoat for luc this last weekend b/c we were doing a planned 22-hour non-stop training hike w/rain forecasted for the whole time (edited: we ended up being out for 16 hours without stopping). since wolves wouldn't be out in the rain for that long, but would go somewhere dry, and he wouldn't have any other choice but to be out there, with me, i did get him a raincoat. luc also has very low body fat and gets cold easily. i didn't get it out of anthropomorphic thoughts, but simply what was going to work for that length of time and distance, which is well-beyond what most dogs other than sled dogs do. but i think any dog that can do what luc can is tough, physically anyways
for what you're doing though, i wouldn't worry.

If I kept my dogs inside just because it was raining, I'd have crazy dogs!
I'd much rather have a muddy house.

From: http://coldflu.about.com/od/cold/f/coldandweather.htm
The truth is, the flu and the common cold are caused by viruses. People get sick more often in the winter because they are exposed to each other more in the winter than in the summer. When it is cold outside, people tend to stay inside and are more likely to spread germs to one another. Also, because school is in session, kids are around each other all day and are not afraid to share their germs. With so many people in such close contact, the likelihood of passing germs is much higher when it is cold outside than when it is warm and people are outdoors.
In tropical areas, where it does not get cold, the common cold and flu season generally occurs during the rainy season. But again, these illnesses are not caused by the rain. They are just more prevalent because people come in closer contact with each other than they do during the dry season.”
So in answer to your question… No, your dog will not get sick because of the rain. Some love to be in the rain, some won’t step foot outside; it depends on the dog. Mojo will have to go out for potty breaks, and will still need all of the physical exercise she needs during the summer, so if she turns out to be one that hates the rain, try to make it out between showers (more pleasant for the humans walking her to! )

My dog's favorite runs are in the rain and snow. He absolutely loves being wet and dirty. I think most dogs much prefer to exercise when it's cold out, rather than when it's warm.

Hi Susan,
I take my dogs for walks in the rain (I mean waterfall type tropical RAIN) all the time. The dogs and I actually prefer it. We live in a relatively quiet residential area anyway, but during downpours there are very few cars out on the road. My 7 m/o Presa Cleo loves to splash around. Never had any ill effects, but remember, we do live in Hawaii, so even in the coldest rain, it doesn't drop below, say 65 degrees.

Every dog is different. Mine can walk without a coat down to 40 degrees. He has little body fat and thin fur, so he gets a coat lower than that. He's fine in rain or snow, but hates slush on his feet. I use booties when there is slush.

hahaha this thread makes me LOL.
Seriously????
It's a dog, not a newborn baby.
Walk the dog, dry the dog off when you get home. Done. Enjoy the rain
