Jeez! Just when Dante had a nearly perfect time where nothing was the matter... now he's got black tar in an ear.
There was no indication anything was happening and then bam! he started bringing his back leg up and ferociously scratching his muzzle. He then started rubbing his muzzle against everything. I saw a small amount of this black substance in one ear. I cleaned it out and the next day it had increased significantly. I cleaned it out again and it came back within days again. It's just one ear.
I'll take him into the vet on Monday but does anyone know what this might be? An infection of some sort? There's been no change in his diet. I started a little bit of HK on the side but the black ear gunk was noticed before that time. Other than this tarry stuff, there's no hair loss on his face and his coat and fur is the best its ever been.
Hi Carol - No head tilting or shaking his head at all. The thing that alerted me to investigate was the muzzle scratching and rubbing. We have synthetic lawn so he's not exposed to grasses other than on his walks where he'll veer off the path into the grass. Even then, it's short and green and I've never encountered foxtails or the like. Right now he's romping and playing in the den with his toy and you'd never think there's a gunky tar pit growing by the minute in one of his ears.
Roger - yes, it was diagnosed as yeast after they looked under a microscope. We received TrizEDTA with Baytril, Dex & Keto as an aqueous flush. No antibiotics or any pills going in so I'm happy about that at least. I checked your link and then found a store that carries that product locally. Sounds good and I'm going to pick some up. Thanks!

Use it outdoors because when they do their headshake it will stain. There are recipes to make it at home but I find it easier to buy it pre made in the bottle. Good luck.
