I recently had a litter of 4 GSD. All seemed well. I started to notice one of the largest males didn't feel the same as the others. He feels loose in his skin, not as firm and active as the others. Now that they are sitting up and sort of walking, I have noticed he gets around by using his front end and sort of drags his hind end. He does attempt to stand but he shakes in his back end - kind of like vibrating... Hard to explain. He is gaining weight and everything else is fine but I am concerned about him. Wondering if he got stepped on or something. Any ideas? Thanx!
He sounds fine. It's normal for very young heavy pups to drag themselves around by their front legs. When he gets a little stronger he'll use his back legs.
I had one pup in my 4 pup litter who could run before the other puppies could do anything but crawl like little seals.
Every dog is different. The heaviest pup in my litter was the last to walk. What you describe sounds to me like the beginning of puppy exercises (when they are learning how to stand). If you are concerned or think he might have a neurological problem, take him to the vet for a sound diagnosis.
Thanks! I did call the vet and he said I may have to put him to sleep, but he can't see me until Monday. Since he is doing well otherwise thought I would give you all a try. Sometimes I think the vets are too hasty. I am going to just wait and see if he improves. He is so different from the others who are really getting around and he is just a fat little scootin walrus! But he isnt in any pain and he seems happy so I will wait this out. Thanx for the advice and encouragement.
I would wait, wait, wait before putting him down. I just had a puppy grow out of two back legs that were completly bowed, bad. Now she is perfectly normal. The vet gave me good advice to wait. You can always put them down later, the downside is our own attachment the longer we have them
