I need some advice from the raw experts on this board.I've been feeding my dog raw since I brought him home at 8 weeks. He is now 8 months old. He always had this very strong doggy smell. I give him a bath about once a month. I hear about people who have dogs on raw say their dogs don't have a smell and that's just not the case with me and my dog. He's been on primarily chicken and I'm wondering could he be allergic to chicken. Any insights, suggestions?

I know only one dog, a friend's dog, who actually gives off the odor of the fish oil. Of course, his owner did not use deodorized fish oil because dogs like that scent/taste.
She switched to the deodorized fish oil from Trader Joe's. Solved.
This was obviously a fishy, not yeasty, smell, though.
With dogs, allergy is extremely unlikely unless the dog is itchy. Odor is not a typical allergy presentation, except for yeast overgrowth (and/or bacterial infection secondary to breaching of the skin from scratching).
1. Is he itchy?
2. Where is the smell strongest? Check mouth, ears, folds, paws, etc.

Yes he is itchy off and on. His coat looks nice and shiny though. One day I was petting him on his stomach and under his, for a lack of a better description, his "arm pits" and when I smelled my hand it was a very strong smell. He is not on fish oil. Should he be? I do give him yogurt.
Alyssa,
I looked at his skin and to me it looks fine. But I don't know what's normal looking skin and what's abnormal. Can you tell me what I should be looking for.
Just a side note. I want to say thanks for the quick responses. This is the best forum I've been a part of.

Sometimes. In the morning I might smell it but it goes away but usually it's a strong stale smell. The only way I can describe it is when you smell a dirty dog. Am I making sense?
Here is one, I had it handy because I am going through this myself. My female was diagnosed with a yeast infection yesterday. Her feet smell like corn chips and the skin between her toes and on her belly is red and irritated.
