Hi Al,
All I can offer is that my one dog went into rapid kidney failure after exhibiting signs/symptoms of lymes dz. She started with N/V..front paws swelled up, acted like she was having pain ambulating....became metabolically unstable from the blood Ph alterations secondard to the kidney failure. Other diseases were ruled out.
From what I gather, the spirochete that causes the lyme disease can infiltrate organs ie..kidney, heart, and cause damage.
We took her to University after local vets said that she needed more treatment than they were able to offer.
She unfortunately did not survive. I swear though, that my dog held on until I gave permission to end her suffering. The vet told me that she passed after she spoke with me. I was already back on my way to her!
This whole sequence from beginning symptoms until her passing was approx 5 days.
She was a great dog!!!!!
I hear the word nephritis and my heart sinks. I lost my Finn to complications from Nephrotic Syndrome (not Lyme disease related) and it was devestating. He lived for over two years after diagnosis but in the end his kidneys failed. My thoughts and wishes are with your friend in hopes that her dog beats it.
I do have a friend (who is a vet) who has a dog that has been battling Lyme disease for a couple years. I do not think she has kidney issues but has had to keep her on low dose of prednisone. On the pred, she seems happy and alert but does have that pred look to her.
