I just realized that my 13 week old GSD puppy is afraid of barking dogs. He hasnt seen one barking just heard them. He i pretty sound otherwise, doesnt get scared around loud machinery, cars, kids, etc. just barking dogs. How should i handle this?
At this age I wouldn't be too concerned. Puppies are hard wired to run away from a barking dog. It is a signal that there is danger and they are not capable of dealing with any real danger. For the pup the danger is at 2 levels, if it is a dog they dont know they will interpret the bark as a threat directed at them. If it is a dog they know, packmate, they will see it as a threat to the pack and will try to "escape" to preserve the pack.
I would just work on obedience and when you have fairly goo control work the dog in an area where you will be barked at. The leadership you show through the obedience control will increase the dogs trust and confidence. Age will also work to cure ths. Try not to put the pup in too many situations that cause this fear or it may become a problem later.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
