I have had 5 APBT’s that I did Schutzhund with and with the exception of 1, I have always had sleeve issues. I have heard it's a typical APBT issue to shake the sleeve. I'm not talking about when it's on the helper, but when they slip it. Most of my dogs take it to the ground, wrap their front feet on the sleeve and shake. I did not continue with two of my dogs because I could never get them to stop. Now my 2 current dogs are doing better but I have puppies and want to try and avoid this. Anyone have this issue and if you did, how did you fix it? Thanks
oh running in a circle doesn't always help.

I'd try to get to a Bernhard Flinks seminar.
His methods produce some really nice, calm grips on the sleeve, and a very good carry.
Have you considered the "Building Drive and Focus" DVD?
For pups, "Preparing your dog for the helper" would be another good one.
Lots of trouble shooting and good training techniques wrapped into those DVDs.

This maybe a unpopular idea but how many times does a dog take the sleeve in a trial?
Shaking the sleeve after the dog wins it doesn't concern me one bit.

I had this same problem with my American Bulldog Toro. The methods in "drive and focus" and "preparing your dog for the helper" helped a great deal. What did the trick though was to attach a line and every time he'd try to put it down I'd start the tugging again. Make sure you don't put the line down or let the dog get to far away from you until you are sure he wont put it down and start chewing at it. After doing this with Toro he will still shake the heck out of it but wont put it to the ground unless I out him.
I hope that helps!

Bob has a good point. Maybe it's a Pit thing to hold on to that sleeve and kill it?
As long as they bit the sleeve, I wouldn't worry too much. Try working with a Boxer in protection. They will punch the sleeve with their mouth closed, then bite it. My female is on the small side, which makes it even more challenging to get her small muzzle on the sleeve.

You all bring good ideas, Thank you. I will look at that DVD and see what I can learn.
I just came back from a Bernhard Seminar and he did help allot but I could only pick his brain for 4 days )
Many people have told me not to worry because in a trail it won't make that big of a deal.
I will try the jerk thing because when I called her to me and she grounded the sleeve it did help to jerk the line till she came. My other problem is I need to build their neck muscles because my 2 girls have a hard time carrying the sleeve. They are only 35 and 45 lbs.
I will look into the dvd for my 3 4 month olds. I think if I can fix it early I can avoid this.
Thank you all

The shaking isnt a big deal unless you are trying to cradle him, my Rott has knocked the **** out of me. But you don't want him chewing and re-biting it like crazy and taking it to the ground trying to eat it.

Lisa,
How have you been training your dog in O/B? In drive, with a ball on a string, food?

I have been working my 12 month old in Ob since she was 12 weeks and she has really good Ob. I always work them in drive with a tug, I did get a ball on a string and have using that too. She does ok with food but has more prey than food drive.
I ordered some new equipment so I can try what Bernhard showed me but I have not got it yet. I do want to work my puppies once their teeth come in all the way.

Lisa,
Has your dog exhibted the same type of shaking behavior with the ball and tug? If so, this may be very hard to stop because it's the way many dogs naturally counter, and if he already has the habit of countering this way it could prove difficult to stop. As long as he isn't allowed to put it down and pick it up again you should be ok.
The O/B and tracking will crossover into your protection work so be very careful about any behavior you allow from your dog during any of these exercises.
