I have a male gsd that is trained to Urinate and
Defecate in a dirt area 20ft by 2ft surrounded by fake grass and hardscape. He does not lift his leg and that is good by me. The problem is when it rains, during and after he does not like to use the area. He would rather use the grass right outside the dirt area. The grass is wet also and his dirt area is picked up every day and the dirt turned over so it is not smelly. He does not use other area's at home or away by his choice except 4 occasions in Ten Months.
When this has happened, the two times it has rained, puzzles me. When he does this I fold his tail under him and walk him to his area and then he is ok after. And he has never deficated outside his area at home????
I know your saying I wish I had it that easy. It is not easy with this or any other commands, he is very well trained with alot of hard consistant work.My question is does the sent wash under the grass so he thinks it is his area even though the dirt is boarderd by brick???

Or maybe he doesn't like mud/wet dirt sticking to his feet?
Wet grass and wet dirt are worlds apart. (Walk out there barefoot and see for yourself.)
How important is it to you for your dog to use a specific area of the yard? The folding his tail under and leading him to his area sounds a bit extreme.
Why not just be content that he is housebroken, and for the most part uses a designated area. It sounds like even when it rains, he is still going very close to the area, he just uses the adjoining grass. Maybe you could add a small area of grass for him to stand on when the dirt is wet?
Or try some gravel. That is what I'm going to do. My lawn guy is going to put it down for me, section a small portion off in the backyard. But that area won't be as large as yours, probably more like 4' X 4'

I'm a fan of mulch--the shredded hardwood or cedar mulch, spread in a thick layer. It eliminates muddy paws, pee can't hurt it, it looks fairly natural in the landscape, and when it finally breaks down you can add another layer.

We are using straw this year in some of our more muddy/bare areas of the dogs runs. I had thought about using some kind of a mulch also.
We have indoor/outdoor runs and they really enjoy destroying the grass so that they can track mud/dirt all over my kennel.
