Hi,
im not sure if any one here will be able to help. Im trying to establish whether plaster/gypsum is toxic to dogs. I was working yesterday and had a bucket of water which had a gypsum based plaster mixed into the water. Our dog started drinking from it and had a few gulps before i noticed.
Last night he wouldnt eat. At first I thought he may be teething again but this morning i gave him a few tiny bits of cheese (he eats soft stuff when he's teething)which he has vommited back up.
Does anyone know whether plaster could upset a dogs stomach?
I don't think it is toxic. I think the danger is it being an obstruction and since he's throwing up what you tried to give him I would take him in for an xray. I would at least talk to the vet about it.
What exactly was the product? was it a joint compound (like you were taping/floating) or an actual plaster?
Here's an msds for joint compound http://www.nationalgypsum.com/msds/msds05002.pdf . Sounds like you should probably take him in as the others recommended because of possible obstruction (see item No 4, first aid measures). The other thing is at full strength some plasters can cause chemical burns as they cure.
Not to scare you-- it sounds like it was heavily diluted-- but taking him to the vet wouldn't hurt especially because he's vomiting.
He's eating again now. He ate all his food last night and kept it in, and seemed on the ball again this morning.
Im wondering if the bringing the cheese up was a co-incidence. The plaster had pretty much set in the bottom of the bucket and the water was sat on top (seperated).
He still though doesnt seem to want to eat anything tough like tripe sticks (not sure what you'd call them in the US). Im wondering if hes teething again. Hes about 14 months old. Can he still be cutting teeth? Another bordeaux breeder we have spoken to says that they dont stop growing till their around 2 yrs and in some cases 3..
Ive said to my partner if hes still a bit funny with his food this afternoon we'll take him to the vet.
