Hi Everyone,
I have an embarassing issue with my Pomeranian. For whatever reason, when we attend our show/handling class, he lifts his leg and pees on me. He has done it a few times now and I am terrified to take my eyes off him even for a split second the entire time we are there. Last week, I corrected him right as he was about to lift his leg. Any ideas as to why he is doing this? He has never done it anywhere else other than at class?

Would he lift his leg on something else if he wasnt held close to you on a show lead? Just as a guess all the different scents and excitement levels of the different dogs are triggering it.
Try not letting him pee on anything until you release him to away from the class.

Kristen, does he stop, sniff your leg, move up and lift to pee? Or is it kind of a moment where he just HAS to pee on SOMETHING because there are so many other dogs around?
Sniffing the leg first is a sign he knows very well what he is marking and he could be "claiming" you because he feels a little threatened by having so many other dogs around. If he doesn't really seem to pay much attention and just sort of lifts and pees, hit or miss it just wound up being in the direction of your leg, then he is probably just overly excited and expressing a need to claim something while in the presence of other dogs.

Really??? We're actually worrying about "why" ? Correct the dog and move on. Peeing on my leg is peeing on my leg, I don't care if he thinks he's putting out a fire!

Mr. Schoonbrood,
Now... I'm trying to stop laughing as I type. A great way to start the morning: a fresh brewed cup of coffee made with fresh ground coffee beans, and a really funny and absolutely true and insightful training comment.
And the thought of a dog that size trying to put out a fire by peeing on it...
And if a dog of any size peed on my leg it would be a one time occasion. I know, I know... All kinds of more gentle, subtle, reasonable training approaches... But every now and then there is a behavior that just begs for an immediate and imprinting correction. Peeing on my leg... "Peeing on my leg is peeing on my leg, I don't care if he thinks he's putting out a fire!" Now, that there's funny, I don't care who you are - to paraphrase Larry the Cable Guy.
'Peeing on my leg and telling me its raining' is another expression that comes to mind... But that is more a commentary on comentary, I suppose.
I always appreciate your insightful commentary and advice.
Thanks for a great morning starter.
Mike A.

My male did it one time in crowded downtown on a Saturday afternoon.
I was wearing shorts and sandals when he lifted his leg. He is tall so it landed half way up the lower portion of my leg.
It wasn't marking, he just needed to pee and I was the closest thing.
He was in the truck a long time and I forgot to let him relieve himself before commencing training. He was only 6 months old.
It was the last time I made that error and the last time I had that problem.
I was too shocked to make a well timed correction.
It probably wouldn't have been fair anyway.

Absolutely! I totally agree! I've had dogs at shows attempt to do this (not mine, they all knew better) and, except for the first time it happened when it came as an unpleasant surprise, I was able to disavow the dog of the idea. I pretty much just had to look at the dog and tell it "Don't even think about it" in my best firm, growling voice.
But it's quite a surprise the first time it happens to you, isn't it?

I had a dog that lifted his leg on my ex. Though I tended to agree with his opinion, I still suspect that laughing was the incorrect response.
I haven't had a dog attempt to mark ME, but agree with others here that it would only happen once.

I have to agree with Mike A, sitting here with my coffee and just laughing out loud at the picture of this in my head.
Thanks for the morning laugh, you brightened my day!

A goofball Dutchie my friend has peed on his leg after an argument they were having about obeying a certain command. He only did it once! He is lucky to live to tell the story. His timing was hilarious, although much funnier when you humanize the story.
