I was wondering how often have people's dogs been sick? My dog had a nasty case of horrible smelling gas on Weds night. It was very strange because she is on raw, and rarely gets gas anymore, and she had plenty. I checked her food supply, and found some backs that I failed to remove some of the fatty ends and other fat tucked underneath. Still, it seemed odd to cause such a problem. I cleaned most of it off, and fasted my dog for a day, then fed her again last night.
At about 2:52 AM (I remember it well ), she woke us up to let her out. She managed to make it almost to the patio, before she vomited. She then vomited another 4-5 times. While I was waiting to decide whether to take her to the vet right away or not, I was googling possible causes and read that some dogs just need to clean out their system from time to time, and they do it by vomiting? And as long as it was normal looking, without any blood. It was just a cleansing process? My dog went back to sleep and I slept on the couch to keep an eye on her. The last time she had an upset stomach was in early October.
I'm not sure if it's her food, but it's from the same shipment she's been eating for the last 2-3 weeks with no problems.
Anyone else experienced this?

No chance that she was dumpster-diving or roadkill-snacking?

One day Andy out of the blue had streaming runs. Just spraying. Left him at the vet, xrays, tests, everything. Nothing turned up and he was fine the next day. Never did figure it out.

Nico was always sick for years, but the other two are rarely if ever sick.
Loki had a similar stomach problem, out of the blue really horrible runny explosive awful poop.
It was so bad there would be drops down the hallway as he was trying to make it to the back door. It scared me to death because he was just going so much and was vomiting and there was some blood in the stool.
Vet said just to wait it out and fast him, and he recovered in a couple of days with no problems.

Pretty much never. IME, when mine have something like you describe, they have gotten into something.

Kind of odd, as I'm reading this my female GSD just went in her crate and barfed. She does get the runs pretty frequently, I think it's stress induced as it usually seems to happen when she has been left home alone longer than normal or when we're traveling.

Connie, I'm about 99% sure she has not gotten into anything. Nothing has really changed around the house.
I am not sure how to check her food supply, other than just tossing it. There's about 25lbs of chicken backs left. The last order and current supply was purchased sometime in late Nov. The one other thing that was odd, was on Weds, she was drinking a lot of water - very rare for her. I would have to pull it from her at times so she wouldn't drink so much. Then about 30 mins later, let her drink more. I just got home from work, and she seemed her normal self. I'm going to give her some boiled rice and chicken for the next 2 days, and see if this clears up.
She last got sick in Oct. Before then, I think it was May. Does that seem normally healthy? or normally sick?

Steve, I had the same thing happen to Brandi.. I think it was August of '07. I had posted about it here thinking it was a corn cob. She was vomiting and had the runs, and was whining. I was pretty worried. They did a barium test and x-rays, nothing turned up either.. Well except a $400 vet bill

Alex, I wouldn't toss 25lbs of food. Could it just have been one bad bird?
Mine are literally never sick. Simon will occasionally get the runs if he sneaks around and gorges himself on cat food that he's stolen, but overeating is a leading cause of diarrhea, so that doesn't worry me and he's fine the next day. Caleb has never been sick, nor Xander, and Widget threw up once after he ate 2 McDonald's breakfast burritos, some American cheese, and a few sticks of beef jerky. Can't say I wouldn't have thrown that up, too, and I weigh a hell of a lot more than 6lbs. Qira has thrown up on the first day of her heat, just once. Other than that, I swear they could eat rocks and be fine.
I would try the rest of that batch of food and see if it's all of it (unlikely, since you fed it for 3 weeks) or just one bad chicken. Another thing...your raw fed dog is generally in better health than average dogs. Maybe she picked up a bug from somewhere and while it would've really knocked down a less healthy dog, your dog only had minor symptoms.

Thanks for the reply Jenni. I was thinking of trying to feed her raw again on Sun. I really don't want to toss all that food and agree it could've been that one bird, or maybe she got a bug from somewhere..
