I had the opportunity to borrow an e-collar from a coworker and I admit it, my curiosity got the better of me . I put it on the lowest setting, balanced it on my arm and hit the button.
I didn't feel a thing... I read that some of the lowest settings people can't feel, but the dog may be able to. Is that pretty common? Lol I didn't sit there and crank it up, but it made me wonder if the dog would even be able to feel it! Granted I didn't have it strapped down, either, lol.
I think I'm going to order Ed's dvd after payday. Since I have the time to wait anyway, what's the basic idea behind getting the dog used to the collar (and not collar smart)? Taking it on and off multiple times over the course of a week or two (kinda like the prong?)? And how often do I need to rotate it if left on for long periods of time (like 8 hours)? So far I haven't even tried it on either dog.
Thanks

Oh come on Carolyn, don't be a wuss, keep turning it up until you can feel it. At least that!
It's good to find out what the dog is feeling.......Really it's not that bad, just keep going.

LOL- I also have to admit that my bf was sitting there watching me with kind of a concerned/horrified fascination.
I did think it was fair to at least see what it was like before putting it on the dog.

Try it in your palm of your hand for best effect. You'd get a better idea on a more sensitive spot on your body. On the dog's neck it is pretty sensitive by comparison to a arm.

I assume you mean you are getting the electric collar training for pets video... It's fantastic! It will teach you all about how to select the correct power level for your particular dog.
And like Randy said, don't be a wuss! Crank it up! Hehehe... Does the collar you borrowed have a nick button or only continuous? I like the nick because it's just a quick burst of stimulation. The only use I can see for the continuous button is for stopping a dog from chasing a deer or something like that. The nick is more like a quick leash correction used in training.
I've strapped my Dogtra 1700 onto my arm and used the highest power setting and the nick button on myself and it feels like a hard pinch but it made my arm muscles involuntarily twitch. Pretty amusing I wouldn't dare to try the continuous button at high power.

I've just never understood the need for me to feel the stim. I'm not going to wear a prong, I'm not going to wear a choker. I gauge the amount of stim by whether or not it is having an effect. It's bad enough we have to be tased to carry a taser, sprayed to carry OC. Geez, I hope I don't have to get shot to carry a gun.

I purposefully shocked myself with the electric fence. It didn't feel good at all.

I'm glad I'm not the first one who tried it .
I think it's this model: http://www.petsafe.net/catalog/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=17&xc=18
Has a "positive" and "negative" tone, and 8 levels of variation. Maybe not what I'd choose if I were to buy one but beggars can't be choosers, lol.
Sorry Ingrid, yes I meant the e-collar for pets video. I think there are some things we can work on that would benefit from the e-collar. One specific issue is where if Jake is dragging a long line in the back yard and Dixon heads my way for some play he's fine. If he's off leash Jake will sometimes bully Dixon if I'm trying to play with him (dixon). That's just not cool at all. From what I understand dog/dog issues are delicate with the e-collar, and that we need to start with basic ob first. It sounds like Ed's dvd is a good place to start.
