After about 6 throws the slobber on the ball freezes SOLID to the chuck it. Duh... I don't know why I didn't think of that happening. I went into my throw and the whole thing, chuck it with ball firmly attached flew out of my hand.
Being the good boy he is, Rush brought it back anyway!
I'm not a weenie about cold as a rule, but I'll be glad when today is over!

yeah, we were having a problem with cold weather fetch too!
It was about -25 last night and i guess the ball was just too cold for Tucker to hold in his mouth, he kept dropping it for a few seconds on his way back. The tennis ball just falls right into the snow until he finds it so it gets pretty icy. He just couldn't seem to take that cold ball on his tongue.
So this year I invested in couple of these: http://leerburg.com/780.htm
The Hol-ee Roller!
I guess because of it's honeycomb shape it doesn't sink into the snow when I throw it, and it doesn't get to be a block of ice after a couple throws. Problem solved and he doesn't have to drop it on the way back to relieve his mouth from the freezing! (i keep calling him a wuss because he is part Husky! lol) Perfect solution for anyone looking for an alternative to a normal ball in the snow.
We have the Hol-ee Mol-ee (more indestructible) and our dogs LOVE it! After two years of them chewing, tugging, fetching, etc., it still looks like new! Haven't had a chance to test it in below zero weather or snow (this being Las Vegas), but I'm sure it would be the perfect ball for those conditions!
Zeus goes like its 70 degrees out and is ready to play. I usually use the plastic orange hunting dummies, they tolerate the cold (I just leave them in the backyard) and they are easy to find in the snow. But I'll be glad when the temp goes up and my gas bill gets a break.
I've had the ball freeze to a wool mitten, and I couldn't get it off until I got home I wear lined leather gloves now
I AM a weenie about cold, even though I should be more than used to it by now having lived in this climate all of my life and having barn chores for much of it. It's painfully cold right now.
I'm using the stairs in my building for games of fetch!
Mine were running around w/a rubber mallot yesterday, the most fun of all toys due to the satisfying yell Mom gives when we run by and whack her in the knee. Then, when I asked them to give it to me (which they know full well what it means) they'd toss it in the snow, where only they could find it. I can't track as well as I could before 30. The cold has certainly changed the normal games. My truck said -17 this morning, but w/windchill it's -30/-40ish.
Seems like with conditions like those you're lucky his tongue didn't stick to the ball like those playground kids that stick their tongues to the metal pole. I might keep some warm water handy just in case.
