Currently own "8 weeks to 8 months" and have "Basic Dog Obedience" on order.
Questions:
1) Anytime I pet my 4 month old pup, she rolls. Am I being too aggressive with her in playtime and training?
2) At my mother-in-law's, my pup sometimes hangs out with4 VERY WELL trained older dogs. There, you can DEFINATELY see a pecking order to laying down, eating, playing and so on. Not so at home. At home, she is always challenging me, and testing borders. Doing something wrong, perhaps?
3) Nails. I am constantly clipping them,a nd they ALWAYS seem to be sharp. Do I need to file them down, or am I missing something. Oddly enough, they seem sharper when cut, hehe
As always, thanks for taking the time to read topic, and answering.
1) sounds like your dog is letting you be the pack leader and submits to you.
2) Dogs will challenge you to see what they can get away with. Your dog is young and is getting more confident and more out going as it gets older. Nothing is wrong with that. Just let it do what you want it's behavior to become. It you don't like it, look into ways to encourage it not to do that behavior and do something else. Put it in a position for success, not failure.
3) If you cut your dogs nails, be sure to know ho far back you can cut, But if you know how far back to cut, you shouldn't have to cut them too often. If you dog walks of asfault, concrete or regulat paved roads that will help keep the nails down. If he never sees paved roads, and is allways on a yard, they will stay sharp.
On one side you talk about the pup rolling every time you pet her, then you say she is always testing and challenging you. The rolling over could just be that she's demanding that you rub her tummy. Some on the board have commented about very tough dogs rolling over for a belly rub. My daughters very sweet, but pushy Pittbull will flop in a heartbeat to get her belly scratched. I don't pet her till she sits nicely in front of me and she never flops for me now.
