Greetings---I am new to this board and I want to gather up some information for helping set up my new puppy to be successful in my home. I currently have a four year old female GSD and a one year kitty. My girl, Sita is a moderately dominant bitch (moreso with other female GSDs). We train a lot in obedience (AKC) and she loves tracking. She listens to me and is very obedient. She had stayed for long periods of time at multiple dog households while I had been overseas and done well. She is well socialized with other dogs and people. There have not been many chances where dogs have stayed with us for a period of time.
I am getting a male puppy (litter is due Dec 19!)I am concerned that Sita may not adjust well to a pup--or worse yet, the pup may get hurt
So my question is what "ground rules" and environment do you recommend for a safe addition of a new puppy and insure the best possible upbringing for this new baby! Plus how can I keep it as stress-free for my current girl? Thanks for your time!
Sarah, the first thing you need to do is introduce them on neutral territory. Sounds like your female is pretty level headed with other dogs. It doesn't sound like you'll have any serious problems. If you intend to compete with the new pup, I'd suggest that you keep the contact between the two to a minnium. This will keep the new pup from bonding to the older dog more than you. Depending on how the cat is around dogs will determine what to do there. Not being a cat person, my suggestion to turn it loose with a couple of good terriers probably won't fit your needs. JKN!
I would highly recommend buying "...Puppy 8 Weeks to 8 Months" and/or "Basic Obedience" from Leerburg.
This topic is addressed as well as other things to set your puppy up for success. I think the videos are great.
I do have the Basic Obedience video from Leerburg, and I will look into the newer puupy video--thanks! AS for my kitty--he has been raised with dogs and gets along fine. My current Shep has a high prey drive but has been around cats from the very beginning too...I guess I am lucky on that one!
I could be wrong but I thought that Ed addressed this in his video...maybe it's the Dog Obedience that he addresses it. He also has an article on his main site.
It'd be best if you read the article but from what I remember...the WORST thing you can do is just let the dogs out together and allow them to "figure it out" themselves.
