One of my pups seems to have a weak spot in each of her very heavy ears that is kind of causing them to do a rather unattractive flop. We're getting to the age where I need to make a decision about taping... or not taping and letting nature do it's thing. My preference would be for her ears to stand at this point.
My question for you guys who have experience taping puppies is that I have seen two methods employed one with alot of rigidity involving popcicle sticks etc such as the version Ed has on taping GSD ears and another stickless method which uses rigid foam glued inside the ears. Has anyone out there tried both? Which method do you find more effective?
How long do you find you need to tape for? Anyone had any bad things happen to watch for?
Really any tips and pointers out there would be super appreciated.
hi Mellisa,
i use med. foam hair rollers
with automotive 3M gaskest seal,
no need for tape
I like this method because, its super easy and very light.
The dogs dont even know its there.
the rollers stay in from anywhere to 3 weeks to 6 weeks and i let them fall
out on there own
i use this method on GSD's i have no experience with other breeds
good luck

My puppy would not accept ear taping no matter what I did. I tried several methods and he freaked. Luckily he's a mixed breed so whacky ears come with the territory!
That appears to be a rather simple method as well. Did you end up using the glue he suggested? I have also heard of using skin bond or weather stripping glue.
How old does a dog have to be before it is too late to train the ear up? I have a Shiloh Shepherd who is just turning 1 year. Her right ear is a little droopy once in a while. I heard about using molefoam and bonding it with Terbot bonding cement, but I haven't tried it yet and wonder if it is too late. I would like it to stand up, but it gives her character if it ends up not. I have a chichuaha who took a little over a year for his one ear to finally stay up all the time. Not too worried. Becky
