Hi All,
Our dogs are on an all raw diet. Their primary source of organ meat is chicken livers (usually about 1 good sized liver per day). We also give chicken gizzards and hearts and beef heart. They also get the little pieces of organ hangers-on in the rib cage of the chickens and cornish game hens we feed.
Lately, I have been using freeze dried 100% beef liver as training treats. Cleo loves them. Should I count the liver treats toward the dogs' organ meat "quota"? Is it possible to give too much liver? Should I cut down on the chicken livers while treating with the beef liver?
For Cleo (10.5 m/o--100lbs), she'll get about a handful (I have big hands) or so per day.
Btw, this is Eric Sacks, not Marisa (I'm on her compu).

I like to use them as part of a "mixed bag" of training rewards so I don't have to worry about it.
Also, a mixture of training treats (for me, that's a combo of freeze-dried liver bits, real cooked meat in tiny bits, and Simon & Huey's and Zuke's soft training treats from LB) triggers a great slot-machine mentality in the dog.
The mixed bag, including jackpotting for very good work on a difficult routine, goes a long way towards keeping training sessions exciting and interesting.

I thought you sounded kind of manly.
Yes, you can overdo liver.
I'm really not sure about the treats, though. Gut instinct would say to cut down on one or the other.
Freeze dried is about the same as dehydrated as far as raw-ness goes, right?
Too much liver could lead to a vitamin a toxicity.

We use those also (try to buy from LB as often as we can). Our pups love 'em, also The mixed bag is a great idea, Cleo seems to tire of the same treats day after day.

You will be amazed.
I have a little baggy in the 'fridge that bits of salmon skin go in, along with any leftovers that they love (in small pieces), and bits of cooked meat and cheese, and then this gets added to the purchased soft training treats.

Hey Mike, good to hear from you again. Hope all's well. Your baby is adorable
How much liver is too much? I think I mentioned this earlier, but Cleo is about 100 lbs. now.
Anyone?

Organ meat should be 5 to 10% of the diet, not to exceed 15%.

Connie,
I feed Cleo about 3 to 3.5 lbs of food per day. I give her one good sized liver each day. Usually I throw in a half dozen gizzards (and a heart or two if I can find them) and a couple ounces of beef heart (again if available). She also gets the little bits in the rib cage of the fowl carcasses. And then she gets the freeze dried treats (now, on occasion
I remember that gizzards and hearts are sort of a combo of muscle/organ meat.
How does this sound for Cleo?
What are some other easily available sources of organ meat?
As soon as I saw Mike mention "toxicity" I began to worry about the amount of liver, specifically.

By weight, how big is "one good sized liver"? A couple of ounces?
The kidneys you mentioned -- attached to the backs -- yes, those are good (free) organ meats, too.

2-3 ounces per liver. We pretty much give just chicken livers. Raw beef liver is hard to deal with and difficult to find in Hawaii.
