I'm training a two year old GSD import that was supposed to be used for law enforcement. However, I'm starting to question his ability to do basic obedience and personal protection. When I play with him he seems to get sidetracked easily. He has great drive when he wants too. Any suggestions on building his drive or helping him get focused?
Good pickup Dennis,
What language was the dog trained in Rick? Any dog trained in German I've run into, I must work to pronounce the words perfectly else I may as well be speaking Japanese sanskrit at them.
How long has the dog been with you Rick.
If my dog isn't learning, I'm doing something wrong.

Seen it before here, someone bought an Import GSD and couldn't figure out why they didn't sent the instruction manual on how to turn the poor dog "on" and worse yet "off"
Thanks for the reply Dennis and Randy, sorry about the delayed response. He has been with me for a week. It's not a language issue; he's listening and performing ok. It's his attention span. He is really immature for a two year old. He loves to play on his own terms. I have noticed this pattern in all areas (tracking, articles, aggression, and obedience.) I'm just wondering if there any suggestions to try before I make the decision to label him a "pet" rather than a "working K9."
A week? I'd work on the bonding , he hasn't even figured out were he's gonna crap at regular or what you're all about yet. gotta do some team building. like I mentioned I'm just a pet owner with two Sch dogs
