I'm reading this book right now (again) because it's so full of good information that I couldn't absorb it all the first time.
I highly recommend this book to anyone no matter what their foundation in dog training is. The author started like many of us "old timers" with Koehler and has evolved into a clicker trainer.
Her book is GREAT!!!! So many of the questions we ALL have about clicker/marker training are addressed in this book.
Thanks for the recommendation Cindy! I've done clicker work with Oscar, but I never moved beyond the really rudimentary stuff... just recently we've started some shaping exercises (as opposed to luring) and the experience has REALLY motivated me to try to get more inside Oscar's head and be a more efficient trainer - I can't wait to read more about this. Thanks also for including the little training video clips in your newsletters - watching you do marker work with your dogs and your horses has been a real inspiration for me to do more with my dog.
I JUST placed a Leerburg order that included the "Quick Clicks" book... I'm going to see if I can add this title before it ships!!
Just when I was so proud of myself to go a month without a Leerburg charge on my credit card.
Does. not. compute.
Yeah. A month seems like a long time to go between orders, doesn't it? Now I MUST HAVE this book. It sounds like it is more 'practice' and less 'theory' than Don't Shoot the Dog.
In terms of content redundancy, how does it compare to Don't Shoot the Dog?
The Thinking Dog is more of a dog training book than DSTD. I don't know that Karen Pryor ever evolved from a Koehler trainer to a clicker trainer the way this author did so her perspective is more applicable to the average dog trainer. I'm not a "book learner" but I am really finding great A-HA moments in this book.
I like the comparisons she uses for getting behaviors, between compulsion, luring and shaping and the pros and cons of different methods.
My order arrived just the other day - I can't WAIT to start in on this book! (gotta force myself to finish the book I'm in the middle of first ...) In the mean time, Oscar's excited to dig into the bag of Zuke's that ALSO came in the Leerburg box! Ahhh, it's just like mini Christmas around here...
