This is a very candid journal of one man's journey into agility competition. There's very little actual information on dog training or how to specifically compete in agility trials. Instead the book is more about Rob's mental journey and the experiences he has. The book is funny and engrossing; I ended up reading it in about three days. Here's my main take aways:
Agility training builds a bond between dog and handler
Lots will go wrong in the ring that doesn't when training
Agility training is fun for the handler and the dog
Having a group you train with and meet up with at trials is very important
Rob starts out as a pretty snooty urbanite who doesn't want to seem too fanatical. He's pretty critical of the suburbanites who typically compete. The main characteristic of his writing is "acerbic wit". He really is funny mainly because he is as critical of himself as he is anyone else. By the end of the book he has an entirely different perspective on his community and his relationship with his dog.
I do recommend this book mainly because it's funny and provides pretty good insight into handler/dog relations.
