Are there any tips or tricks to doing this? I have a 4-month old Blue Lacy and would like to exercise him by riding my bike. But how do I go about this without killing myself OR Ranger??
4 months is way too young for that, it'll be horrible for his growing joints!
I'd recommend waiting till the dog's done growing, then start slowly and gradually build up his endurance.
But if you're running him on pavement or concrete, really make sure his growth plates have closed and his joints have had time to harden up before doing this! (I'm talking 1 1/2 to 2 years old for a medium-to-large sized dog, and even then do it very gradually).
Ditto on running a 4 month old dog. Way too young. You will likely set the dog up for a life-time of orthopedic problems if you do that. Wait until the growth plates close at 18-24 months for extended exercise like that.

Granted, to actually run would be hell for the pup--now and later like has already been stated.
However, I think it is very beneficial at this time in your pup's life to condition him to the bike. Have him out next to it as you walk it, then work on turns, etc, just getting him used to walking next to it. Maybe take the bike on a walk with you. ? I did this with my baby pup and worked up to slow walks with me on the bike. Be careful on turns! We started with a lot of left turns and slowly worked our way into figure 8's. Slow so he is at a walking pace. Short sessions. Just my opinion.

Alyssa, it is 1/2 cement and 1/2 dirt. After a 2 mile walk she still is not tired and wants to play. She is over 40 lbs. now.
Michele, I think the idea of starting to walk a pup next to a bike is a great idea. Just something else to learn early without too much demand on the body. Pups love to learn!
