I have an 8month old puppy and alot of videos
from the Leerburg site, and I read most of the articles. I recently ordered the Bernard Flicks video of how to build focus in a dog using ball reward, and I haven't received it yet. Perhaps my questions will be answered later in watching the tape. However, perhaps
the more experienced trainers here can help me.
My pup has prey drive, for a puppy tug, and tug of war. He has some retrieve drive that I reinforce with food, and tossing a second ball in exchange for first ball is not interesting to him. Basically, he has prey drive but it hasn't been focused on ball reward, because he hasn't been socialized to a ball on a string from 2 to 8 months. He does show interest, but not enough in order for it to be a meaningful reward. He responds much better to food and praise. I keep my praise level high. He is a "soft" dog, that only needs a level "1" or "2" correction and has strong desire to please and works well with mild correction.
How do I start increasing his prey drive and stop using food reward? How do I know what an appropriate prey item for him is?
All answers and more will be answered with what I call the best 2 hours of training that I have ever received. You will be knocked off your socks when Ed’s video arrives! It will show you how to let your dog show you what prey item he likes the best. It will show you how to build prey drive with this item and when he has enough drive to move on to using it on obedience training. I bet when you see how a dog reacts to someone who does not know how to present the prey that this will look very familiar to you. Good luck.
