Help!
I came home today and my 15 month old German Shepherd had a lump on the side of his mouth and his ears are down like a lab.. I took him to the vet and he got a shot of steroids and and some prednisone to take for the next few days, as well as a shot of antihistamine.. The leather of his ears is very thick and swollen.. I think he ate a bee.. Do you think his ears will go back up? And is there anything I should be doing? The vet said his ears were down because they were thick and heavy, but he didn't know if they would go back up.. I appreciate any thoughts from the forum.. I think a lot of you know more than the vets do on these types of things..
Thank you!
Lisa
If I had to guess, he got stung by a bee. This happened to a lab we had years ago and her ears swelled up terribly, as did her lip. Although different from a shepherd's ears, they did get back to normal. I'm betting your dog's will do so as well... let's think positive and keep our fingers crossed. Either way, you are still gonna' love the floppy eared dog!! (They love us no matter what we look like in the a.m... surely they deserve the same.)
Thank you for your response! Yes, I will still love the floppy eared dog, but shallow as it sounds, I love the look of the German Shepherd and I will be sad if his ears don't come back up ): I am grateful that he is doing better and his breathing is fine, I know I could have lost him if he had an allergic reaction. Poor guy.. I am working with him in Schutzhund training and his prey drive has gotten him into trouble with chasing bees..
It's not quite the same thing as it's not an insect bite, but my Shepherd slammed his head repeatedly into the side of his crate trying to get out. It made the whole side of his face and mouth swell up. Both ears got really leathery and heavy and flopped down too.
His ears really did look like a lab's ears and the rest of him looked like he'd been in a boxing match...and lost.
After the swelling went away, which took about 4 days, everything went back to normal. Both ears came back up to the normal position for them
... although for one of the ears that's only about halfway up most of the time. I got him like that as an adult, so it didn't have anything to do with the swelling.
Best wishes that those ears will be right back up.

Its not shallow; I too love the look of my dog's ears and I'd be disappointed if something happened them, so I really do understand.
Good News! The ears are back up! The steroids brought down the inflamation and those ears popped back up.. Phew.. My boy looks like a German Shepherd again.. And the best part is the swelling and pain is gone and he is eating again. Thank you to everybody for your responses and encouragement.. You are the best!! (of course, because we are dog lovers!)
