Hi, may I know if I should continue to play tug with my pup when teething (changing teeth) period ? Will the grip be weaker during this period due to the uncomfortable of the gum ?
If not, how to maintain high prey drive for the pup ?
It's advisable to stop or limit tug/bite work when your pup is teething.
My pup is teething right now as well and LOVES the bite work - even if it is uncomfortable. As a test, the other day I attempted some bite work to see what would happen and after his first bite he began to bleed on the tug - and that was NOT because I was yanking the tug around - he just bit it and carried it around. When I gave him the AUS command I saw the blood. I stopped immediately.
To keep his drive up I use myself as prey. I'll do basic OB and let him come to me and then I move away letting him chase me a bit. I also use food as a reward and keep him active.
I don't tug with teething puppies, and I wait for their adult teeth to set before continuing tug work, but I do let them bite if they like it (bite and drop, just no tug).
Hi, while I stop training my pup bite work during the teething period, I would like to ask a question on full mouth grip. I have watched all the pup videos from Leerburg but can't really find a good way to teach the dog to do a full mouth grip.
May I know if it is generic and can be trained ? If there is a method to do so, care to share ?
A full mouth grip is genetic. One thing you can do is when the pup has a grip (if it's not quite full), hold the tug still and let him counter (bite fuller into the tug), and when he does play again.
Another thing you can do while the pup is teething, you can tie a rag on a pole (broom stick handle) and build his drive without pulling on his teeth, like in the Drive and Focus DVD.
Goodness me.. 1st time I encountered a pup prefers the daily dog food more than what I think is high value sausage to her. 1st meal at 9am , then I train her using sausage at 4pm before her 2nd meal at 6pm.
I think I may have to skip or reduce the 1st morning meal. Any other suggestion on the "high value food" besides sausage ?
Tiny bits of steak, cut up.
Zukes/Simon & Hueys Treats.
Natural Balance/Redbarn rolls (cut up very small).
Cheese.
Hotdogs.
Don't train BEFORE mealtime. Even a puppy can figure out that whether or not it works well, you'll be feeding it dinner shortly.
Why buy the cow, when it can get the milk for free?
If the pup will work for kibble, consider feeding her meal DURING training. Let her work for every bite.
You can split the meal in half- let her earn half through OB, and the other half in the scentpad for her foundation scent work.
