I took the day off today to catch up on all of those things I never seem to get done. Need to refill the dogs heartworm preventative and decided I would take them with to get their nails clipped since I have such a rough time. Thought I was smart and would wear them out with a little fetch and a walk. Took jake outside, threw the ball ONCE and he trips over one off the ceramic bowls I keep out there for water. The darm thing breaks, he somehow steps on it and slices his paw open!!
So I stuff him in the car, call the vet and they say bring him in. Now he's at the vet getting stiches all because of that stupid bowl. I'm giving the other one to the neighbor (who has cats) and buying some more stainless.
Anyway- sorry this is a rant but watch out for those ceramic bowls.
As long as you are making the investment in stainless steel, might I recommend these Leerburg bowls. They are the only steel bowls I have ever owned that haven't ended up dented all to hell or full punctures. They are safe to leave outside and seem to appear perpetually new.
I hope Jake's paw is okay, and that he heals nice and fast.
Got Jake back from the Vet around 3. He got 5 stitches (or staples, can't remember) that have to come out in 7-10 days. Also got some antibiotics to guard against infection.
I'm supposed to keep him quiet for 5-7 days!!! since the stitches are in an area that moves and flexes a lot. No idea how I'm going to do that he's going to be bouncing off the walls by tomorrow. I gave him a kong with a little cream cheese when we got home and put him in his crate to keep him still. So far he's quiet/napping. I'm gonna have to go to petco or something and buy some bully sticks to keep him occupied and away from the bandage.
Any suggestions on keeping a dog from going stir crazy? The vet we usually visit wasn't there. I have no doubts to this vet's competence, just wish he was more talkative in providing information. I know they have to ask, but I hate it when they say "...and how did this happen?" The only positive thing was that the vet said it 'went back together' very quickly since the cut was so fresh. He also recommended I look at one of those attachments for a hose-bib that they can lick for water.
eta: I just got Ed's pack structure for family pet dvd in the mail on Thursday. Watched it over the weekend and have been trying to implement some of the concepts- It's probably wishful thinking but I feel like I see some improvement in Jake's and my relationship already. Maybe this is just a great excuse to work on some little things like sitting at doors, calm behavior, and focus along with the extra crate time.
