4 year old Rottweiler
108 pounds
Suffering from lupus, currently in the middle of a bad flare-up
(swollen lymph nodes, lethargic--150 mg Pred)
Just got 'Jamieson Wild Salmon Oil Complex' (can add the info if needed) and 'exact' Vitamin E (200 IU USP from 135 mg of d-alpha tocopherol). (My sister picked these up for me...I should have specified plain salmon oil. Neither have been opened, I could return them if they aren't suitable.)
How much to give of each per day? Divide it into more than one dose? Break open the capsules first? Do I hop in and just give the full amounts from the get-go or do I slowly increase the amounts until she is on a regular dose?
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
EPA (Eicosapentanoic Acid TG) 180 mg
DHA (Docosahexanoic Acid TG) 120 mg
(Derived from 1,000 mg of pure molecularly distilled sardine, anchovy, and wild Alaskan salmon fish oil in the natural bioactive TG Triglyceride form.)
I know you should give 400 IU in the vitamin e for large dog- just throw it in with his food-most dogs will eat it right up- not sure on the dosage of salmon oil - i use the grizzly oil from leerburg and i give 4 pumps at night (100lbs dogs) with their vitamin e with food-you can just start giving full dose when you figure out dose - good luck
It should be okay. anchovy and sardine and salmon mixed gives you great Omegas AND less chance of mercury overload.
health food ladies and my doctor (D.O.) recommend anchovy sardine salmon mixes.
My only confusion: 1000 mg of oil breaks down to 180 mg of EPA and 120 of DHA. Connie can tell you the dosing for that.
A higher EPA is better for skin, tissue, and joints. Higher DHA is better for brain. Seems you should stick to higher EPA unless doc tells otherwise. Grizzly is higher in DHA.
Want to venture a guess at to dose for her? (SORRY! Posting at the same time, ha ha ha!)
(I did see on the link to the Jamieson page that these can cause tummy upsets, though the cod liver oil I was giving before didn't seem to...because she's known to have a very sensitive stomach, should I give a 1/4 dose to start with and move up from there?)
