After watching Ingrid's video of Frost backing up it inspired me to teach Chula that command.
I'm not doing well with it so far...
I'm starting in front of her with a lure (treat in my fist) and moving into her, but most of the time she will sit, instead of back up.
On the occasions that she does back up a step, I mark and reward, but she doesn't really seem to be getting it. We've done several short sessions over the past 3 days.
Question...when you trained her sit, did you "push" your hand in and up to get her to sit? If so, maybe she is confusing the "lure" with the hand signal to sit.

How are you luring her?
If she's following your hand up she's going to sit.
Have you tried not luring her but just using your forward motion to get her to take a step back?
Keep the treats behind you, take a step towards her while she is standing and she should take a step back, click & reward.
I have tried to just step into her, at which point she thinks it's a game and jumps up on me...(she's not too inclined to back away from much... )
I think I will try luring again, but keep my hand down low, so that she won't be so inclined to sit.

I would stick with this for a bit, but try it in an area where she HAS to go either up or back, like between a couch and wall or coffee table. Correct (or ignore if train that way) her for jumping and keep moving until she does back up. As soon as she does, PRAISE!!!!

Lynne, using a table or other obstacle is a good idea too.
Are you clicker training this?
when she jumps up on you if you step into her, does she actually jump up on you, or is she doing one of those dolphin type jumps backwards?
thats how Tucker first does the back up, he'll do this big dolphin jump backwards then step back normally.
Actually he's pretty smart...if im just trying to get him to back up to get out of the way, he only has to do one huge jump backwards instead of a bunch of little steps....lol
does anyone else know what I mean by a dolphin jump???
It's kind of like a pounce, only backwards.
