I mentioned this on another thread and didn't want to jack a thread so in answer to some queries, my tale of misery:
I have two intact females that I may breed and a male I had neutered when he was two, I figured if he had no bullets he won't go shooting. That was a mistake, He tied with one of my females when she came into heat and got his plumbing stuck outside his sheath. I rushed him to the ER and they wanted to amputate, I was opposed to that and wanted to wait until it was absolutely necessary. The Dr told me the after care would require that I pull the sheath back three times a day and clean the member, I said I would. So they put everything back where it was suppose to go and installed a catheter and kept him for observation. He's a very poor patient and anytime a Vet tech got near him he would try to bite them so I took some FMLA and stayed with him, I even re inserted the catheter and gave some shots and did all the feeding. I ended his home treatment when it appeared he was enjoying it way too much.

I don't know why this thread reminded me of one of Ed's breeding Q&A pages on the Leerburg main site:
QUESTION on Breeding Dogs:
I have not used my male for 5 years. Do I need to clear him out and if so how soon before I breed. I plan on breeding in 2 to 3 days. thanks
ANSWER on Breeding Dogs:
No this is not necessary. But he may enjoy it if you wish to try.
I would just like to point out (for those who don't understand what he's talking about) that male dogs have bones in their penis's. One false move from the bitch and that boys ding dong is broken.
