Dogs do not have the ability to reason as we humans do even though at times it damn well seems so. Yet through forming various associations we form some sort of communication system with parameters which the dog operates within.
Hi all, I am another newbie to the list from the land down under. Have had rotties for over 20 years and a lot to do with working German Shepherds,Timber Shepherds and Dobes, the company we worked for in Papua New Guinea has over 200 working security dogs so we got to raise,train and handle all types of temperaments. Now if you want to know if dogs think or not there is one sure way to find out, get a Black Russian Terrier, or 2 or 3, they are the thinkingest dogs you will ever meet, just ask Rich. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Timber Shepherd = German Shepherd with a bit of North Americian Grey Wolf. I know how Ed feels about these dogs <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif" alt="" /> but our ex boss imported the first ones years ago and has bred about 35 litters for the company, the biggest percentage of the 200 or so dogs are now TS. So far about 95% have turned out to be great working dogs but a few are too soft. They always work with a handler and on lead. Personally I much prefer my BRT`s. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

The Australian Air Force is also using TS as military dogs, a couple went to East Timor, and the Police Force is also thinking of using them over here as soon as the Air force has enough extra trained.

I vote that dogs can think in the limited capacity that their brain allows. No, they can not compute complex calculations but they can form an idea as to how to obtain an end.
Ever have your house dog come and stand in front of you and stare with the "Hey Dummy, I have to PEE and if you do not let me out then you get mad and I feel shamed that you were not smart enough to let me out in the first place, oh one with the thumbs"
Dogs have it all figured out. They are playing us. We cater to them take care of them love them. Someone once said if the alliens were looking down on earth and see the dog leading us on lead and we are walking holding their crap in plastic bags. They would just assume the dog is higher life form.
