I have got an enormous amount of help from this board in training my puppy (now 7 months). I have been working on sit, down , stay, heel, and come, but now I need help on a unique command (or maybe not so unique).
I have been trying to teach the "seek" command,
I hide 100 to 200 yards in the woods from her and yell SEEK, she then tracks me down and I reward her when she finds me. My goal is to be able to command SEEK "jake", my son or seek "tori, allie etc and have her find the correct person.
I have been putting them in a circle , each has food, and when I say SEEK jake, I take her to jake and she get rewarded from him etc etc. she doesnt seem to understand name for the person when i take the lead off of her, any suggestions?
Well, just my opinion here, but I think what you are trying to do is a bit ahead of both you and your dog at the moment.
Essentially you are teaching scent discrimination, but not giving the dog the scent. When the dog has been taught scent discrimination you could give the dog "tori's" scent and a seek or find command, but right now you and your dog are not speaking the same language.
There are several books out there that can explain this to you in much better detail than I ever could here. One that I think has a fun side to it is "Fun Nosework for Dogs" by Roy Hunter. It was a cheap book, easy to read, and full of "games" that have practical applications.
In essence with the hide and seek you have played with your puppy she has basically learned to come which is fairly natural to begin with scentwork is complex, but can be fun if you understand what you are trying to teach. If you don't understand what you are doing, how can you expect the dog to?
Yes, I guess I am saying that putting a bunch of people in a circle, all of which are holding food, and expecting a 7 month old PUPPY to find a specific person is a little more complex than you think.
My other point is that if you truly want to be able to use this to "find" someone you need to understand what you are teaching. I do not see the practical application of teaching the dog to find a specific person based on sight alone. What happens when you can't see Tori?
This is not something to be working any dog on much leas a 7 month old puppy. If the Dutch can barely teach their adult specilaty police service dogs to do scent identification - no one in this country is going to reinvent the dog and teach it to do so at 7 months of age. This thread is closed - it goes beyond sound dog training.
