Well you know how dogs greet/meet each other by smelling each other. And I read once that if a dog doesn't allow it, they are considered "a snob". Well, LOL, I have one of those dogs. My 2 females will let other dogs greet them, no problem. My male, a dog cannot sniff him in any way, butt or nose. He will growl and possible lunge. But when he ever did lunge, never a fight with teeth involved, more like yelling. And most of this is on a leash. When we were signed with a doggie park, he could walk in and sniff other dogs with no problem, (as long as no humping got involved, he would not stand for that). My dogs are Weimaraners, and he is 6.
Yes there is a question. What can I do to prevent him from growling at other dogs while being sniffed. I have told him no, many types of collars,I am not tense when this is happening. Of course I am alert. But what would make him show hatred for another dog sniffing him?
Why should another sniff him? You don't have to allow it.
I don't allow any dog to sniff my male. He is very aggressive about being sniffed--adults or puppies. Only 3 dogs can sniff him without him snarling, lunging, and trying to put down the other dog, so I just don't let other dogs get near.
That means no dog park. So, no biggie. We can even walk with friends who have dogs (after a time of acclimation) but NO sniffing.

ok, thought it was different that my dog didn't like getting sniffed so I guess by reading your post he's not the only one.
Oh, heck no!
Two of mine have their noses in each other's privates every day, but do not extend that to strange (outside the pack) members. One of them just doesn't do or allow it, period.
If you have a dog who pretty much wants to ignore and be ignored by dogs outside his pack, then that sounds fine to me.
I love going to pet expos and bringing all my dogs with me. I have 2 kids so each kid takes a dog, and I get Luke. He's fine walking around, and I purposely don't bring him to meet other dogs. Except its funny how he will accept a sniff from another Weimaraner!!! Especially a female. I just have to watch the other people that will allow their dogs to sniff mine, thats when I have to walk away before its too late.
