I called a trainer I found in the Orlando phone book. I told him I need someone to do some bite work with my dog periodically to keep him where he needs to be.
He said it would cost me $100 for him to come look at my dog and $150 if he did any bite work. After that he said it would cost $200 per session.

I'd call him back and tell him "In no way, shape, or form am I going to support your drug addiction." Then hang up and find someone who doesn't charge so much, but is as good or better.
The guy that helped with my bite work charge $150 for the first visit he would show you tapes of his work from start to finish dogs and of course he showed several of his best clinets.
Then he would evaluate your dog, check the dogs obedience and temperment. Then he advise what you would start to work on.
He comments, "You should brush up on his/her Ob, and we would start in two weeks. Or we have to see if your dog has the drive or you are in good shape we will start the next session". It didn't matter if you said your dog had training or not.
He said learned never to trust anybody idea of training but his own (good idea with your ass on line).
Depending on the dogs final evaluation. Which was paid in advance. So the first visit was $75 and the first training session was $75. The proceding training session where $75, this way you always paid ahead of time unless you made other arrangements.
FWIW, my trainer, in Monterey County, CA, charges $75/hour for training--but, of course, he's not going to do bite work for an hour, and we're talking Schutzhund, not personal protection. Just a data point.

Dave,
Being from the Bay Area, even $75 is high...Who in Monterey does helper work? The only clubs that I know of in the area are South County and Jim Stark who does the K9 training for Witmer Tyson.
